Fuentespreadas brings together local history, an archaeological assemblage and a landscape shaped by agriculture. The town was founded around the year 1000. Its parish church, “Iglesia de San Cristóbal,” was built in the mid-12th century, rebuilt in the 14th century and remodeled again in the 18th century. This sequence distinguishes the original construction from later building phases. Heraldic coats of arms on some house façades add a detail beyond church architecture to the view of the local built environment.

History and Material Evidence

The “Ajuar de Fuentespreadas” offers a different way of approaching the past than the church’s building history. It includes remnants of the deceased’s clothing and weapons, as well as the horse’s bridle and tack. It also includes agricultural and livestock-raising tools, liturgical objects and vessels for domestic use. The assemblage thus ranges from personal equipment and horse gear to work, religious practice and household life. The two perspectives complement each other when considering local history: the church represents changes to a building over several centuries, while the Ajuar represents different areas of life brought together in a single archaeological assemblage.

Agriculture and Landscape

The area’s agricultural character can be understood through two specific types of farming. Irrigated land is used to grow corn, sugar beets and alfalfa; dry-farmed land is planted with cereals, legumes and sunflowers. Some vineyards are also part of the landscape. In addition to the crops listed, the type of farming is also relevant: the information explicitly distinguishes between irrigated and dry-farmed land.

The municipality has little forest cover. Its landscape is characterized by stands of pine and maritime pine, rows and groves of poplars, and scattered wooded areas near the town. When describing the landscape, it is also useful to distinguish between rows of trees, groves and individual wooded areas. This makes it possible to consider the area’s rural character not only through its agricultural land but also through other specific landscape features.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The festival calendar offers three distinct dates. The “FONTIBVS PREDATIS” Roman Market has been held on the third weekend of August since 2004. The patron saint festivals in honor of “Nuestra Señora del Rosario” are celebrated on the first Sunday in October; the Quintos celebrate their festival on December 26. The calendar thus runs from late summer through autumn to the end of the year. The dates also differ: the market takes place over a weekend, while the other two festivals fall on a specific Sunday or calendar date. If you are traveling for a festival, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
