If you are looking for a hotel in Ricobayo, you can plan your trip around specific interests: the Los Perones hiking trail, the Church of Santa Eulalia, geological formations or a historic route. Ricobayo offers a variety of points of interest to explore. The following places and trails give you an overview of the destination’s highlights.

Church and Prehistoric Altar

The parish church of Ricobayo is dedicated to Saint Eulalia. The present-day Church of Santa Eulalia is a simple, small building. Its main chapel was completely rebuilt in the mid-18th century, and the altarpiece also dates from that century.

The Altar del Castillón is located right next to the parish church. It is a prehistoric altar made from a boulder weighing more than ten tonnes. Two steps carved into its upper surface lead to a circular hollow. These sites represent two distinct aspects: Santa Eulalia is associated with its dedication, chapel and altarpiece, while the Altar del Castillón is notable for the shape of its boulder and how it was worked. If you are interested in architectural and cultural history, both named sites offer specific points of interest that can be distinguished from one another.

Granite Landscape, Reservoir and Bridge

The Ricobayo-Muelas del Pan granite landscape is a striking example of an area shaped by igneous rocks in western Zamora. Its impressive formations are characteristic, and the area also offers good conditions for observing them. Here, the focus is less on individual buildings and more on the shape of the granite.

The Ricobayo Reservoir, the Ricobayo Power Plant and the Ricobayo Dam are located on the Esla River in the province of Zamora. The complex is also known as Salto de Ricobayo or Embalse del Esla and is less than one kilometre from Ricobayo de Alba. These names refer to the body of water and its associated structures as parts of the same landscape.

Another striking structure is the Puente de Ricobayo. This arch bridge, with its mixed construction, spans the Esla Reservoir with a span of 168 metres. Near Ricobayo, it carries the N-122 road across the Esla. The area’s different features can therefore be viewed in context: the granite landscape as a geological area and the bridge as an engineering structure over the water.

Hiking Trails and Route Details

Los Perones is a hiking trail in Ricobayo de Alba, approximately 8.1 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. The trail passes through the village to the modern riverside bathing area, then climbs through scrubland to the Fuente de los Perones. It also passes the Cascadas de Cadozos, which are only a few metres from the Ricobayo Reservoir.

The distance and difficulty level answer different planning questions: the approximate distance indicates the length of the route, while the rating specifies its level of difficulty. The route details add the sequence of the village section, the riverside bathing area and the climb through scrubland to the Fuente de los Perones.

Ricobayo de Alba is also connected to the Camino Portugués de la Vía de la Plata: a historical route guide lists the village at kilometre 37.8 of the route. For current directions, bear in mind that trail markings and services may change. This route detail therefore differs from the specific distance and difficulty information for Los Perones.
