Villadepera offers different ways to explore its landscape and history: views of the Duero, traces of mining, historic connections and preserved heritage. For planning your trip, these themes can be considered separately: viewpoints and trails offer different experiences from the Mina El Carrascal, sacred collections or the events in October.

Landscape and trails along the Duero

At the Mirador de Peña Centigosa, there is a walkway and viewpoints overlooking the Duero. Walkways integrated into the surroundings and projecting platforms are intended to improve visitor access and safety. If you are interested in viewpoints, you can combine views of the river with the design of the mirador here.

In the Arribes del Duero Nature Park, the Duero has cut through granite and metamorphic rocks, forming a river canyon. The Puente de Requejo also offers views of the nature park’s landscape. Here, the geological character of the river valley and the view from a named structure provide different perspectives.

A narrow path leads from the area around Peña Centigosa into the Arribe. Experienced hikers can return to Villadepera on a circular route; trail conditions should be checked locally. The GR-14 Moral de Sayago–Villadepera reaches Villadepera via the old Camino Viejo de Zamora. Another hiking route runs between Villadepera and Villardiegua de la Ribera. There, cliffs shaped by water over millions of years offer a scenic draw. The trails described differ, for example, in the possible circular route at Peña Centigosa and the rocky landscape along the route to Villardiegua.

Mining and historic connections

The Mina El Carrascal is four kilometres from Villadepera. The gallery may be of Roman origin; it was mainly worked in the 16th and 17th centuries. Visitors can walk through more than 200 metres of the galleries. They can see part of an ore vein and the shaft that connected the different levels. Its possible early origins and later exploitation belong to different periods in the history of mining.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Puente de Requejo, popularly known as Puente Pino, was a significant engineering structure that improved connections between Sayago and Aliste. Another historic crossing is the Paso de la Barca between Villadepera and Pino del Oro. It connected the Zamoran regions of Aliste and Sayago and was in operation from the Middle Ages until 1914. The bridge and the Paso de la Barca therefore represent different historic stages in the connections between the regions.

Sacred and preserved cultural heritage

The Museo Sacro is housed in the former Ermita de San Roque. Its collection includes objects and vestments used in religious rituals over the centuries. The building and the collection thus offer two distinct ways to explore Villadepera’s sacred heritage.

The Fuente Beber is considered to be of Roman origin. The Fuente de la Santa is a spring with iron-rich water, which was traditionally believed to have healing properties. These two springs differ both in their traditional classification and in how their water is described.

Villadepera also preserves an old communal alquitara, the old Lagar de las Escabadas and the Tejar de la Laguna. These ethnographic heritage sites add further aspects of preserved cultural heritage to the themes of mining, sacred collections and historic crossings.

October events and trip planning

The Ofertorio del Rosario takes place on the first Sunday in October. The annual Legua Pino-Villadepera athletics race is scheduled for the first Saturday in October. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the specific date for that year in advance.

Plan your visit around the topic that interests you most while you are there.
