Villarrín De Campos
Accommodation in Villarrín De Campos
Villarrín De Campos combines an extensive lagoon landscape with birdwatching, long-standing customs, architectural heritage and a municipal golf course. If you are looking for a hotel in Villarrín De Campos, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: are you especially interested in nature, local traditions or golf? The town’s specific features give you a basis for choosing a destination that suits your interests.
Lagoons, birdwatching and the watercourse
Laguna de las Salinas covers 70 hectares and lies within the territories of Villarrín De Campos and Villafáfila. Birdwatchers can visit the Villarrín De Campos Observatory, one of the three most important observatories in the Villafáfila Nature Reserve. The lagoon and observatory offer different points of interest for anyone wishing to explore the landscape and birdlife.
The Río Salado is also a defining feature of the town: it rises in Villarrín De Campos as water drains from the lagoons and flows through the municipal golf course for almost a kilometre. Its connection to water can therefore be understood both through the lagoons and by following the river’s course through the facility.
Traditions and architectural heritage
The first documentary record of Villarrín De Campos dates from 15 April 1157. Its traditional architectural heritage also includes numerous well-preserved dovecotes. Circular and square floor plans are especially common, and these forms reflect the variety of local building styles.
In a side chapel of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is an image of the Cristo de los Afligidos, which is especially revered by local residents. Religious heritage and local customs are thus both part of the town’s cultural character.
During the Quintos celebration, participants take charge on the first Sunday in February. On the eve of the celebration, they parade through the streets with large cowbells. For Las Águedas, women dressed in traditional regional or comarca costume parade through Villarrín and appoint a woman mayor for the day. The two customs have distinct features: the Quintos celebration centres on the cowbell parade and the designated Sunday, while Las Águedas centres on traditional dress and the appointment of a woman mayor.
Another religious tradition takes place in the area around Villarrín: on 8 May, the Romería a la Virgen del Templo is a barefoot penitential pilgrimage to the hermitage in Pajares de la Lampreana. Its destination distinguishes this pilgrimage from the parades held specifically in Villarrín.
Golf and regional produce
The municipal golf course has nine holes and is set on a 24-hectare natural meadow within the Lagunas de Villafáfila Nature Reserve. The facility also includes a practice area, a putting green and a pitch-and-putt area. The nine holes, the natural meadow and the practice and playing areas each describe a different aspect of the course: its size, its setting and the facilities available for practice and play.
The lentil from Tierra de Campos is part of the regional culinary scene. It has its own protected geographical indication (IGP), adding a regional product to the area’s nature, architecture and traditions.
