Viñas: Alistanian Architecture and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Viñas
Viñas brings together traditional Alistanian architecture, religious heritage, long-standing customs and regional activities. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: you can explore the town’s architecture, learn more about San Esteban or coordinate your stay with a documented festival or event date. Mushroom gathering in the Parque Micológico Montes del Noroeste Zamorano may also be relevant to a visit to the region.
Architecture and religious heritage in Viñas
Viñas’s townscape preserves examples of traditional Alistanian architecture. Traditional houses are built from stone, wood and mud. These materials offer a tangible starting point if you are interested in regional building methods. The parish church of San Esteban stands in the upper part of Viñas; its main altar has fluted columns. Fluting means that the columns have lengthwise grooves—a striking detail to look for when viewing the altar.
Another religious landmark is the Ermita de la Inmaculada in the town centre. The Cruz del Campo marks the arrival in Viñas. A historical story is also associated with it: a resident of Viñas who had emigrated to America supported the construction of the Cruz del Campo in 1966. The church, ermita and Cruz thus represent different connections to the town: a consecrated parish church, a chapel in the centre and an arrival marker with a recorded history of its origins.
The historic settlement heritage of the Viñas area includes the surviving Castro Llombo Latedo and Castro Castrico de La Verea. Both names add another perspective on the area’s settlement history to the themes of church architecture and traditional houses. When planning, you can distinguish these historical connections from features of the present-day townscape.
Long-standing customs and the Fiestas de San Esteban
One of the local dances associated with Viñas is “El galandún,” passed down with the song “Señor galandún galandún, galandaina.” The custom of lighting fires in honour of the souls is also part of the local tradition. Threshing is one of the Alistanian activities associated with Viñas and offers another insight into regional traditions. Together, these examples show different facets of intangible heritage: dance and song, a custom honouring the souls, and a traditional activity.
The traditional Fiestas de San Esteban were held from 23 to 27 December in the 2023 and 2025 editions. The programme included a tortilla de patata competition, including an edition billed as the “XVII Concurso de Tortilla de Patata.” If you wish to plan your trip around the fiestas, check the date and programme for the relevant edition. This lets you take the documented period into account without assuming it applies to another year.
Mushroom gathering and Micocyl
Viñas de Aliste is included in the Parque Micológico PMZA-50.001 Montes del Noroeste Zamorano. A single Micocyl permit covers mushroom gathering in the Parque Micológico Montes del Noroeste Zamorano and its expansion area. Gathering is permitted with this permit. Before your trip, check whether the permit covers the area you intend to visit and the time when you plan to gather; gathering seasons and operational rules may change.
The Micocyl app shows your location on a map and alerts you when you enter or leave a regulated mushroom-gathering area. As its features may change, check them before gathering. The permit and the app serve different purposes: the permit applies to gathering in regulated areas, while the app shows your location and the area boundaries.
Trail event in October 2026
The Rincón de Aliste Trail is scheduled to take place in Viñas de Aliste in October 2026 as part of the Zamora Trail Series. The series’ provincial circuit is open to licensed and unlicensed runners. Check the final date of the trail before travelling. This gives you both the scheduled month and venue, as well as the provincial circuit’s participation requirements, for planning purposes.
