Scriptorium, chapels and local history
The Scriptorium de San Martín opened to the public as a visitor attraction on April 11, 2026. Access and paths were improved during its preparation; protective and signage elements were also added. The site has been set up as an early medieval eremitic space, and the visit is structured and educational.
The Monastery of San Martín de Albelda was founded as a Benedictine monastery by King Sancho on January 5, 924. In the 10th century, it was intended to become a cultural center for La Rioja. The Bodegas district is also home to a group of caves known as the “scriptorium rupestre.” According to a theory by historian Antonino González Blanco, a scribe school may have existed there, from which the monastery’s Scriptorium of San Martín supposedly emerged in the 10th century.
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Bueyo preserves a semicircular Romanesque apse dating from the 12th century. It lies in an irrigated valley and cultivated landscape of fruit trees and streams. The route begins on a good path and then continues along a tree-lined walking path. In the town center stands the rectangular Ermita de Santa Isabel, with a semicircular-arched entrance. It was rebuilt in 1911; after its reconstruction in 2003, religious services resumed there toward the end of that year.
The mural “Mural de la Antigua Iglesia Colegial de San Martín de Albelda” can be viewed at Calle La Carrera 15.
Viewpoints and trails along the Iregua
The Mirador de San Martín is located on the former site of the Church of San Martín. From there, you can see the whole town. Benches and a spacious seating area provide a place to enjoy the view over the valley. The Mirador de la Peña offers a different perspective on the landscape: a well-maintained footpath leads to the summit, where you can look out over the Iregua Valley.
The Paseo del Iregua includes walking paths along both banks of the river and connects to the Vía Verde. This route is 77.2 kilometers long, accessible throughout on foot and by vehicle, and suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. It runs through the entire Iregua Valley, from Logroño to Puerto de Piqueras.
At the Vía Romana del Iregua, an information board in Albelda describes the municipality’s cultural heritage.
Local traditions
Three local folk dances are preserved and still performed in Albelda: “El Árbol,” “El Rápido” and “La Danza de Albelda.” The Los Quintos celebration lasts three days, from February 5 to 7. On February 5, the Quintos and Quintas walk around town, visit homes and offer neighbors cookies and liqueur. If your trip falls on these dates, check the event schedule in advance.
