When planning your trip to Alcanadre, you can choose from several specific areas of interest: the Sendero de Aradón, cultural heritage sites, recurring festivals and wine. If you are looking for a hotel in Alcanadre, consider whether trails and scenery, architectural and art history, a date on the annual calendar or the Rioja wine tradition matters most to you.

Sendero de Aradón, the Ebro and nature

The Sendero de Aradón connects Alcanadre with the Ermita de Aradón along a route of more than five kilometres. The route is suitable for all users and can be travelled on foot or by mountain bike. It also leads to the Peñacasa recreation area on the Ebro. There are children's play equipment, tables and barbecue areas there. As the condition of individual facilities may change over time, check the condition of the amenities that matter to you before visiting.

Along the Sendero, the Ebro riverbank zone is part of the Natura 2000 network. It preserves habitats of particular interest, including habitat for the European mink. Another natural feature is the Cortados de Aradón: the gypsum cliffs are home to a significant colony of cliff-nesting birds. Alcanadre's landscape includes both the Ebro's riverbank habitats and the striking rocky scenery of the Cortados de Aradón.

Culture in Alcanadre: the church and Roman heritage

The parish church of Santa María de la Asunción in Alcanadre is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) and was built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The church houses a Romanesque sandstone statue of the Virgin Mary known as the Virgen de Santa María de Aradón. A high relief of the Virgin and Child in the church of Santa María de Alcanadre dates from the last third of the 12th century. The statue and the relief offer two distinct historical and artistic points of reference for exploring the town's sacred heritage.

The ruins of the Roman aqueduct of Calahorra on the right bank of the Ebro are designated a Bien de Interés Cultural near Alcanadre. The Roman aqueduct Puente Moros in Alcanadre has several partly buried arches and substantial piers. Together with the parish church, these structures show how different periods are represented in the local cultural landscape.

Festivals and recurring events

Santa Águeda is celebrated on 5 February with a procession; the festivities also include performances and events on the first weekend of February. At Christmas, the living nativity scene Belén Viviente de Alcanadre takes place every year on Monte Viso. It has been staged since 1971. The pilgrimage to the Ermita de Aradón is another recurring event: it takes place on the first Saturday in May and the first Saturday in September. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these celebrations, check the exact dates before setting off.

Rioja wine and visitor options

Alcanadre is included in the Ruta de la Viña Recia wine route in La Rioja Baja. At Bodegas Ochagavía, you can taste D.O. Rioja wines made mainly from Tempranillo and Garnacha. Check the arrangements for visits in advance. At Bodega Beleluin, four sisters have continued the experience and tradition of Rioja winemaking as a joint family venture since 2009. These details offer different ways to take wine culture and your interest in visiting into account when planning your trip.

Getting there and route connections
