Castroviejo: Landscape, Hiking and Church Architecture
Accommodation in Castroviejo
Castroviejo combines a striking landscape of slopes and woodland with ecclesiastical architectural history and a circular hiking route that starts in the village. If you are looking for hotels in Castroviejo, these themes can help you choose your destination: nature, hiking or architectural history may be the focus of your trip. The Church of San Ildefonso, the Ermita de las Santas Nunilo y Alodia and the Hayedo de Castroviejo route are particularly concrete examples to consider.
Slopes, woodland and the Río Yalde
Steep slopes shape the area, rising to the peaks of the Serradero. A wooded setting is also part of Castroviejo’s landscape. On the edge of the village, the recreation area on the Río Yalde lies next to the frontón court. It includes former cultivated land, scrubland and beech trees. Wildlife includes squirrels, great tits and chaffinches. The landscape therefore ranges from mountain terrain to the river area on the edge of the village and its different habitats.
Churches and architectural history
The parish church of San Ildefonso is a masonry building dating from the 16th century. Its single-nave layout has three sections and ends in an octagonal apse; the two-tier tower dates from the 18th century. The dates distinguish the different construction phases: the church dates from the 16th century, and the tower from the 18th century. The main altar in the presbytery is a 16th-century Romanist work with Baroque elements. Both the architectural form and the artistic design are defining features of San Ildefonso.
The Ermita de las Santas Nunilo y Alodia is also one of Castroviejo’s cultural highlights; it is also known as the Ermita de las “Santitas”. The chapel dates from the 18th century, is built of masonry and has a single-nave plan and a wooden gabled roof. While the apse, tower and altar are key features of San Ildefonso, the chapel’s plan and roof construction stand out at the Ermita.
Hayedo de Castroviejo hiking route
The Hayedo de Castroviejo route starts in Castroviejo and forms a 15 km circular hike with more than 500 metres of elevation gain. It crosses the Embalse de Yalde, passes through Piedrahincada and the Cocote de la Risca, and reaches the peaks of the Serradero before descending to the recreation area at the source of the Río Yalde. The route links named terrain features and ridges with the riverside area at the end of the descent described.
A shorter option is about 7 km long, has around 400 metres of elevation gain and begins the descent before the Cocote de la Risca. Compared with the 15 km circular route, the options differ in length, elevation gain and the point at which the descent begins. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
