Daroca de Rioja: Forest Trails, History and Festivals
Accommodation in Daroca De Rioja
If you are considering Daroca de Rioja as a destination for a stay, this guide offers information about forest trails, historic sites and recurring festivals. The landscape and routes offer a different focus from the hermitages and events held throughout the year—useful if you want to plan your trip around hiking, culture or a particular date.
Forest Trails and the Landscape of the Sierra de Moncalvillo
An extensive network of paths and trails leads through oak, pine and beech forests. Along the way, there are panoramic views of the Ebro and Iregua valleys, as well as Rioja Alta and Rioja Media. The Sierra de Moncalvillo also has numerous walking trails and routes. Those who enjoy exploring on foot can experience a variety of landscapes rather than limiting themselves to a single route.
A striking feature of the terrain is the Barranco del Colorao: a large red cleft in the rock in the Sierra de Moncalvillo, visible from afar from the upper part of the mountain range; there is a risk of falling rocks in the highest section. There is a risk of falling rocks in the highest section. The Neveras de Moncalvillo include restored and signposted historic ice houses and charcoal kilns on the heights of the Sierra. They add visible traces of past uses to the hiking and landscape themes, without being linked to any specific route.
A separate visitor facility is located at the entrance to Hornos de Moncalvillo: a picnic area with barbecue grills, a spring and tables. If you plan to stop here, check its condition before your visit; facilities may change.
Hermitage and Historic Traces
The restored Ermita de San Lorenzo stands outside the village on the site of an earlier chapel of the same name dating from the 13th century. The present building dates from the 17th century. This makes it possible to distinguish two clearly separate phases of construction: the older chapel on the same site and the later restored hermitage.
The ruins of the medieval Ermita de San Lamberto offer a different picture. They lie south of the village, less than a kilometre uphill along the Camino del Santo. Only traces of the floor plan remain. The two historic sites therefore offer different points of interest: San Lorenzo is a restored hermitage, while San Lamberto is characterised by the remaining traces of its floor plan.
Festivals and Dates Throughout the Year
The exhibition of old agricultural machinery is usually held every two years in odd-numbered years, on a weekend between late August and early September. Tools and machinery illustrating rural life in the recent past are displayed in the village streets and venues. If you want to plan your trip around this exhibition, confirm the next date locally in advance.
On the weekend that includes the feast day of Saint Lawrence on 10 August, two Masses and processions with traditional dances take place. The festival also features cultural events, a traditional chop tasting, children's games, chocolate celebrations and public dances. The celebration in honour of Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio falls on the second Sunday in November. Since 2007, its week of events has included exhibitions, concerts, other cultural events and a communal meal. A Baroque image of Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio dates from the 17th century. Dates and programmes may change; check the details if a festival is important to your travel plans.
