Valgañón brings together several features that may influence your choice of destination: a mountain wetland, a holly forest, designated trails and Romanesque church art. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Valgañón, first consider whether you want to focus on nature, architectural history or a local festival date. The different destinations and events offer distinct points of interest.

Mountain Wetland and Holly Forest

Laguna de la Dehesa is a natural mountain wetland and is included in the Spanish Wetlands Inventory. The diversity of animal groups found there is also described in specific terms for nature enthusiasts: eight amphibian species and ten dragonfly species breed in the lagoon. A 600-metre footpath leads through the Dehesa to a point opposite Laguna de la Dehesa.

The Acebal de Valgañón covers about ten hectares; some of its holly trees reach more than ten metres in height. The holly trees provide refuge and a source of food for numerous species. The Acebal bears the designation VS-50-ENP as a special vegetation area; in the regional Natura 2000 listing, it is classified as an area of special vegetation. The nature experiences in Valgañón therefore differ: at Laguna, the focus is on the mountain wetland and amphibian and dragonfly species, while at the Acebal it is on holly trees and their ecological role.

Hiking and Cycling

The Acebal can be explored in all directions; the recommended route heads west. As trail conditions may change seasonally, it is worth checking them locally. Valgañón also has a designated circular hike called Ruta Circular del Acebal de Valgañón. Check the signs and local conditions before planning your excursion. The designated route name and the recommended westward direction are two separate points of reference; they do not establish any further connection between trails.

For mountain biking, BTT routes run through the Hayedos de Zamaqueria to Alto de Pradilla and continue through the Dehesa. Conditions here, too, may vary depending on the season. The cycling event Travesía Valdeminochi takes place in Valgañón and counts toward the OPEN XCM standings. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the event dates in advance. Hiking, cycling and a possible event date therefore offer different focuses for planning.

Churches and Architectural History

The former parish church of Valgañón, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Tres Fuentes, is now located on the outskirts of the village. It was consecrated on 7 November 1224. Its tympanum depicts an unusual Annunciation group: the Virgin Mary stands in the centre, flanked by the archangels Gabriel and Michael. The church has one of the few Romanesque sculpted tympana in La Rioja. The depiction thus offers a specific view of the figures on the tympanum while also placing the building within the region’s Romanesque art.

The church of Santa María de Tres Fuentes has an apse and a portal dating from the 13th century. Its windows have lobed arches; the door features Romanesque-style wrought-iron fittings. The Ermita de San Andrés offers another historical connection: it was built in the 18th century as an auxiliary church to the parish church. These different construction dates span the 13th to the 18th century and provide a reason to consider church architecture alongside the natural attractions when planning your trip.

San Isidro Labrador

The celebration of San Isidro Labrador on 15 May includes a pilgrimage to the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Tresfuentes. If you would like to visit Valgañón for the occasion, check the festival dates before your trip. The date gives your visit its own focus and can be considered when choosing your travel dates alongside hiking trails, cycling opportunities and church art.
