The La Rioja Biosphere Reserve is associated with Villarroya. Nature, traces of history and local architectural styles give your trip different points of focus: you can explore the Carrascal holm oak forest, consider hiking routes or learn more about the town’s history. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, this variety helps you choose Villarroya as a destination based on the topics that interest you.

Holm Oak Forest and Nature in the Carrascal

The Carrascal de Villarroya is a 264.4-hectare holm oak forest on the southern slope of the Sierra de Yerga. It is considered one of the few remaining examples of the former dehesas in La Rioja. Holm oaks and planted pine trees grow in the El Carrascal recreation area. The mature woodland also includes standing and fallen deadwood, as well as numerous microhabitats on the trunks of large trees. These conditions favor, among other things, the presence of the beetle Limoniscus violaceus, which is classified as endangered.

The animals listed as living there include the European hare, garden dormouse, weasel, partridge, ocellated lizard and marbled newt. The mention of these species does not guarantee that you will see them. To reach the recreation area, take the road from Villarroya to Grávalos; at the end of the holm oak forest, turn right. Road conditions and signage may change, so check the information before setting out.

The Ruta de la Encina de Villarroya is rated easy and is 1.61 kilometers long. The walk from the LR-123 road is estimated to take about 35 minutes. This duration is approximate, as trail conditions may vary. The Encina de Villarroya o de Mario is also included in the list of La Rioja’s 60 notable individual trees.

Night Sky and Paleontological Traces

Villarroya is considered one of the suitable places in the La Rioja Biosphere Reserve for observing the night sky. In July 2012, the FundaciĂłn Starlight certified the area as the first Spanish destination in a protected area. Whether the stars are visible depends on the weather.

The Yacimiento de mamĂferos del Cuaternario de Villarroya, a classic paleontological site with a diverse Villafranchian vertebrate fauna, is also located near Villarroya. The fossils include finds from 11 carnivore species, 7 even-toed ungulate species and 2 odd-toed ungulate species. The site should not be treated as a tourist attraction; no tourist or recreational activities should take place there. Access is without a path or trail.

Local History and Traditional Architecture

The Ruta de las Neveras includes Villarroya’s restored snow wells. Another historical trace is the Paseo de las Bodegas: it was renovated in 2009, when former livestock shelters were converted into family wine cellars. Villarroya also has traditional shelters for goats and sheep, including enclosures dug into the rock. These examples stand alongside traditional apiaries for honey production, built from masonry, adobe bricks and plaster.

The Abejera de Villarroya is another distinctive local structure. It is located in a cave in a rock face above a stream in the Carrascal. Coal mining also shaped the town’s history: coal was mined in Villarroya until 1968, when the last coal mines closed.

Church and Local Festivals

The parish church of San Juan Bautista is a tourist attraction in Villarroya. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting. San Juan Bautista is associated with June 24, and Gracias with the third Sunday in September. Check the current festival program before your trip so you don’t mistake these dates for confirmation of a current event schedule.

Whether your trip is focused on the forest and wildlife, the night sky or the town’s history, these different themes can help you tailor your stay in Villarroya to your own interests.
