Zaldierna – Architecture, River and Circular Route
Accommodation in Zaldierna
Townscape between river and architectural history
Zaldierna lies in the Oja Valley, at the Barranco de Cilbarna; the Zambullón River flows through the village. At the entrance to the village stands an 18th-century architectural ensemble that forms part of La Rioja’s Historical and Artistic Heritage. It consists of rubble masonry and ashlar masonry and features arcades; in places, retaining walls stand above the river. Rubble masonry is a general building method, while ashlar masonry uses squared stones; arcades are a series of arches. These terms help identify the ensemble’s architectural elements more precisely.
Church of San Sebastián
A stone bridge over the Zambullón leads to the Church of San Sebastián. The church stands on a slope; the Arroyo Zambullón runs at the foot of its retaining wall. Its single-nave bell gable has two round-arched openings. The high altar is a Baroque work from the 18th century. The bridge and slope describe the church’s location in the village. The ensemble at the entrance to the village and the altar both date from the 18th century, while the bell gable and bridge each add their own architectural character.
Hiking the Robledal de La Ganchera circular route
The Robledal de La Ganchera circular route is 6.0 kilometres long and connects Zaldierna, Azarrulla and San Antón, three villages on the Oja River. When planning a hike, you can consider the route length and place names together: the distance indicates the scope of the loop, while the names show which villages it connects. Check trail conditions before setting out. The references to the rivers can also be distinguished: the three villages lie on the Oja, while the Zambullón flows through Zaldierna. This helps distinguish the route’s landscape from that of the village.
Getting there from Ezcaray
From Ezcaray, you can reach Zaldierna via the road to the aldeas. After the junction for Cilbarrena, the village is close to the road. This sequence provides a practical guide for your journey. As road conditions can change, it is best to check them before you travel.
Festivals throughout the year
On 20 January, Zaldierna celebrates the feast day of Saint Sebastian, the village’s patron saint. Día de Gracias is celebrated on the last weekend of August with a mass and a communal meal. The two celebrations fall at different times of the year: one is on a fixed day in January, the other on a weekend at the end of August. If you want to plan your trip around one of the celebrations, check the current dates in advance. The difference between a fixed calendar date and a weekend date can help you choose when to travel.
A historic nickname
Zaldierna was once known as the “Capital de las Aldeas” of the valley. This historic name adds another cultural perspective on the village alongside its buildings and celebrations.
