Aibar offers everything from the Church of San Pedro and its historic townscape to wildlife watching and activities beneath ancient oak trees. It also has exhibitions on renewable energy and a museum dedicated to traditional culture. These varied highlights give you practical ideas for tailoring your trip to Aibar to your interests.

San Pedro and the historic centre

The Parroquia de San Pedro de Aibar is considered an important example of Navarrese Romanesque architecture and one of Navarre’s oldest Romanesque churches with monumental sculpture. The Iglesia de San Pedro combines Romanesque and Gothic elements; its origins date back to 1146. The original building had three naves and three semicircular apses. The central nave was wider than the side aisles.

In the historic centre of Aibar/Oibar, streets and houses wind uphill in semicircular paths towards a former complex crowned by a fortified wall. The Portal de la Hueca marks the highest point of the hill. The first settlement there was protected by a defensive castle that has since disappeared. The church and street layout thus reveal different aspects of the town’s history: the architectural development of San Pedro and the shape of the fortified settlement.

Artamendia: courses and circular trail

Artamendia Aventura is about 3 km from Aibar, beneath an ancient oak forest. The adventure park features activities among the trees, swings, nets, zip lines and suspension bridges. Two treetop courses of varying difficulty share the same area in the centuries-old oak forest. The Circuito de IniciaciĂłn is designed for children aged 3 and over; this age recommendation applies to this course. The park operates seasonally, and this may change. Check current visiting options in advance.

The area around Artamendia also has a circular trail about 5 km long, with no significant change in elevation. Its length and elevation profile are two practical points to consider when comparing the walk with the park’s activities. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

Renewable energy and local heritage

The Aula de Energías Renovables has two large exhibition areas and an audiovisual room. The exhibition includes information panels, models showing different types of renewable energy, and videos. Visits to renewable energy facilities in the Comarca are organised from there. There are also hands-on activities with natural fuels under the motto “Hazlo tú mism@”. You may need to arrange the visitor programme in advance.

The Casa-museo de los Oficios y la Memoria de Aibar presents traditional culture, the way people lived in the past and the town’s intangible cultural heritage. Wine, oil and grain are its main themes. Guided tours, including a tasting, are available by prior arrangement; check the current arrangements before your visit.

Wetland and birdwatching

The Balsa de La Mueda is a 12-hectare natural wetland. Migratory birds found there include bitterns, storks and cranes. The observation hide is a simple wooden hut with viewing slits, from which you can watch birds. Water levels and sightings vary seasonally. Take these changes into account if you are planning your visit around wildlife watching.
