You can explore Beintza-Labaien through a range of themes: cultural routes to washhouses and springs, architectural history in its neighbourhoods, and the Embalses de Leurtza. When planning a stay, you can decide which of these to focus on depending on whether you are more interested in local history, routes or landscapes.

Cultural Routes and Everyday History

Two cultural routes in Beintza-Labaien lead to washhouses and springs. They are approximately 6 and 2.5 kilometres long, respectively. The difference in route length gives you a concrete point of reference when planning your outings. Information panels and eyewitness accounts convey what everyday life in the municipality was like in the past, particularly women’s experiences. So, alongside the destinations, the focus is also on people’s life stories and the role of women in the community’s past.

Buildings Between Beintza and Labaien

Between the neighbourhoods of Beintza and Labaien, opposite the local mill, stands a crucero—a stone cross dating from the 16th century. According to local legend, it was erected in 1599 after conflicts, to bring peace between the two neighbourhoods. The legend thus places the cross within the history of relations between Beintza and Labaien.

The Church of San Pedro in Beintza is predominantly Gothic-Renaissance in style. Its furnishings include a Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century, which provides a different stylistic and historical accent. If you are visiting with a particular interest in architectural history, you can compare the predominant design of the church building with the later altarpiece.

Embalses de Leurtza and Getting There

The Embalses de Leurtza are designated as an Área Natural Recreativa (ANR-2) and lie within the municipal territories of Urrotz and Beintza-Labaien. The landscape includes meadows, beech forests on the slopes and open areas on the peaks, as well as the reservoirs. Their location within both municipalities helps you place the natural area geographically.

From Urroz, you can reach the Embalses de Leurtza via a 5-kilometre paved rural road. Seasonal parking regulations may apply, so take this into account when planning your journey.

Cycling Route and Connecting Trail

EuroVelo 1 runs for a 6-kilometre stretch through the municipality of Beintza-Labaien. Paved sections of the Ederbidea cycling route between Bera and Irurtzun within the municipality were completed in 2019 and 2020. The distance given refers to the EuroVelo 1 section, while the years indicate when the improvement works took place.

The E.GR 11–GR 12 connecting trail is also known as Bidasoa Trekking. On the descent, the described route passes first through Labaien and then through Beintza. This gives you different points of reference: a section length for Ederbidea and the order of the towns for Bidasoa Trekking. Check current route conditions before setting out on a specific hike.

Annual Festivities

The patron saint festivities in Beintza-Labaien begin on the first weekend of August and end on Tuesday; the exact calendar dates vary from year to year. The festivities have included demonstrations of Basque rural sports and axe-throwing competitions. The programme may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your accommodation around the festivities, check the dates for the relevant year.

Traditionally, the autumn festival was held on a date in October that varied from year to year. A calf or a whole pig was usually roasted for a communal meal. The two festivities therefore offer different seasonal reference points for planning your trip: the August weekend with the patron saint festivities, and the autumn festival in October.
