Burguete: The Camino de Santiago, architecture and Pyrenean routes
Accommodation in Burguete
Burguete brings together the history of the Camino de Santiago, architecture, routes and nature. The protected historic center of Auritz-Burguete is crossed by the Camino route. The town developed around the Camino de Santiago to provide for pilgrims arriving from Europe across the Pyrenees. If you are looking for hotels in Burguete, these different themes can shape your travel plans.
Architecture and history in Burguete
The Church of San Nicolás de Bari has medieval origins. Its classically Baroque portal façade is made of ashlar stone and dates from 1699. The houses also reflect adaptation to the Pyrenees: homes with hipped roofs have been preserved in Auritz-Burguete, with roof pitches of up to 60 degrees to help cope with snow. A hipped roof also has sloping end walls; here, the steep roof surfaces are associated with snow.
Puente Arrobi is a small medieval single-arch bridge over the Urrobi River. The church and bridge represent different building purposes: religious architecture on the one hand, and a river crossing on the other. The town cemetery is also part of local history. Miguel Gortari designed it in 1964; it received national recognition for its beauty and innovative design.
The archaeological site of Zaldua contains remains of the Roman road from Astorga to Bordeaux. Neolithic dolmens are located within the municipality of Burguete, including the Lindus Dolmen. These archaeological remains broaden the picture beyond the church, bridge and houses, adding further historical themes to your travel plans.
Hiking trails and historic routes
The Ruta de los Búnkeres de Burguete runs along the Pyrenean border area and follows three marked trails to the remains of a defensive line that was planned during the Spanish Civil War. The route thus combines hiking with a history of military planning. Trail conditions on this route may change; check them before setting out.
Another option is the fourth stage of the GR Urkiaga–Auritz/Burguete: it is 18 kilometers long and passes through Auritz/Burguete. The Valles de Arce y Aezkoa route starts in the north, in Burguete, and descends to the Palacio de Arce. The GR route’s stage length and the described course of the Valles route offer different points of reference as you plan your hike.
Nature and guided activities
The Collado de Lindus is considered one of Europe’s most important migration corridors for birds. Bird migration adds a distinct natural highlight alongside the architecture and hiking routes. Those interested in mycology can consider guided visits to the Parque Micológico Erro-Roncesvalles. During these nature visits, knowledgeable guides share information about fungi. Dates and booking conditions may vary; check them as you plan.
Guided electric mountain bike rides are another option: Irati E-bike offers them, including bike rental, and it is possible to start in Auritz/Burguete. The guided nature visits focus on mycology, while the e-bike rides are a cycling activity. You can choose between these offerings based on the topic that interests you most during your trip.
