Cascante offers different ways to spend your stay: explore buildings and museums, delve into Roman history, or follow trails around the Laguna de Lor. If you are looking for a hotel in Cascante, you can choose based on the activities that matter most to you. The sights and routes vary in subject and length. This makes it easy to decide in advance whether you want to focus on culture or also set aside time for the scenery and outdoor activities.

Cultural history and architecture

The Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Romero was built in the Baroque style between 1684 and 1693. A Baroque brick colonnade with 39 round arches connects the basilica with Cascante. The church also contains a Gothic chapel dedicated to Saint Mark. It houses an original Gothic altarpiece from the first half of the 16th century, commissioned from the painter Pedro Díaz de Oviedo.

Another perspective on the history of religious architecture can be found at the Iglesia de la AsunciĂłn, built between 1527 and 1558. It houses a collection of paintings that includes the Tabla de la AsunciĂłn from the late 16th century. The Iglesia de la Victoria is in the centre of Cascante. It was once a MĂnimos monastery, and some parts of its buildings have been preserved.

The museums also cover different subjects. The Museo Etnográfico is in Parque del Romero, next to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Romero. It presents the history and traditional trades of Cascante through farming tools, old organs, coins and other objects. The Museo de Santa Vicenta, by contrast, focuses on the life of Vicenta María López y Vicuña. The museum is housed in her four-storey birthplace and also displays personal belongings. The distinction is clear: one focuses on the history and trades of the town, the other on the life of one person.

Trails and scenery around Cascante

The Laguna de Lor lies between Cascante and Ablitas and is used for fishing, walking and birdwatching. A raised trail about 3 km long runs around the lagoon. The landscape of La Huerta de Cascante also has its own character: it consists mainly of vineyards and olive groves, as well as field margins, reed beds, irrigation channels and paths.

Two local routes offer a useful comparison of distances. The Estación de Cascante–Barillas–Olivos de la plana–Laguna de Lor–Estación de Cascante route is 9.2 km long. The Cascante–Humedales cycle route covers 35.55 km. The different distances give you an idea of the scope of planning required for each route.

The Vía Verde del Tarazonica is suitable for walkers and cyclists. On the Murchante–Cascante section, the route climbs towards Cascante. There is a rest area at the former Cascante railway station. The Vía Verde is therefore another option alongside the routes by the Laguna de Lor, and is designed for both walking and cycling.

Roman past and local traditions

In Roman times, Cascante was known as Cascantum and was the eleventh stop on the route between Tarragona and Astorga. The Semana Romana de Cascante draws on this heritage, celebrating the Roman archaeological heritage of Cascantum in Hispania with workshops, conferences, an exhibition, theatre and other activities.

The Semana Romana usually takes place in June. Its annual events include a community theatre project in which dozens of residents perform a play inspired by the Roman era. The programme may vary from year to year, so check the specific dates and events before planning your trip.

Another long-standing tradition takes place on the third weekend in May at the La Cruceta monument, which stands on a small hill. There, the fields and harvest are blessed together with the parish priest and local authorities. This tradition adds another glimpse of local customs alongside the Roman themes and gives you an additional seasonal reference point when planning your trip.
