Enériz: The Camino de Santiago, EuroVelo and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Enériz
Enériz brings hiking and cycling routes together with a townscape shaped by historic houses and the parish church of Mary Magdalene. The Aragonese Camino de Santiago reaches the town, and the fourth stage of EuroVelo 1 from Pamplona (Iruña) to Estella-Lizarra passes through it. If you are looking for a hotel in Enériz, you can plan your trip around these routes or the town’s architectural and artistic history.
Hiking and cycling routes
The section of the French-Aragonese Camino de Santiago from Monreal to Puente la Reina is a 31.52 km linear hiking route of moderate difficulty. On this section, you reach Enériz five kilometres after Olcoz. Visit Navarra currently publishes the route with these details; official route information may be revised. Check it before your hike.
The fourth stage of EuroVelo 1 also passes through Enériz. It runs for 54 km from Pamplona (Iruña) to Estella-Lizarra. Where EuroVelo 1 does not follow the Camino de Santiago, the route uses quiet secondary roads. This offers two different ways to plan a journey: a designated hiking route and a longer cycling stage with its own start and end points.
A circular walk starts in Enériz, heads towards the hermitage of Santo Domingo and then continues through Nekeas. It returns to the starting point via Eunate. The route is 10.58 km long, with 176 m of elevation change. It follows mostly easy-to-walk paths; distances and climbs are described as not especially demanding. Trail conditions can change, so it is a good idea to check them before setting out.
Church, art and townscape
The parish church of Mary Magdalene was built between 1763 and 1765. The main altar was created with the participation of altarpiece maker Juan de Gasteluzar and sculptor Bernabé Imberto. The church also houses a small Renaissance altarpiece of Saint Catherine, restored in 1997. It comes from Enériz’s former Romanesque church and was later housed in the hermitage of Santa Catalina, adjoining the cemetery. Its original polychromy, with burnished gilding and sgraffito grotesques, has been preserved. The hermitage is within the municipality of Enériz.
Along Calle Mayor, stone and brick houses, as well as former palaces, shape the townscape. This offers another way to experience the town beyond its role on the routes: architecture and ecclesiastical art history can be explored as separate themes when planning a trip. The monument to the Sacred Heart is beside Enériz and the Camino de Santiago, on a small path.
Landscape and local tradition
The Robo River and the Gabildoa stream cross the municipal area. Its elevations include Montemocha, Chaparral and Monte Castellano.
Historically, wine was one of Enériz’s major agricultural products. The patron saint festivities take place from 3 to 6 September. If you would like to plan your trip around these dates, check the festival dates in advance.
