Galdeano at the foot of the Sierra de Lóquiz
Accommodation in Galdeano
Galdeano lies at the foot of the Sierra de Lóquiz. Trails through the mountain landscape, historic buildings and local festival dates shape the village. You can therefore plan your stay around hikes, the architecture of San Pedro and the Palacio, or a specific festival period.
Hiking and landscape
The PR-NA 185 circular trail begins near the Church of San Pedro. It leads from Galdeano to the Ermita de San Cosme y San Damián, continues through Artavia and returns to Galdeano. Parking is available on Galdeano’s streets. Check local parking conditions before setting out.
The climb from Galdeano to the Ermita de San Cosme y San Damián is 12.2 kilometres long and passes the Ermita de San Miguel. Trail conditions can vary; take this into account when planning. The circular route of the PR-NA 185 describes the return via Artavia, while the stated distance refers to the climb to the Ermita. The route format and distance are therefore two different planning considerations.
On the route between Galdeano and Artavia, the trail runs above the Urederra River. The Portuguese oak, a native oak species, is the predominant tree there. The river and oak woodland give this stretch of trail a distinct landscape character.
Church of San Pedro
The Church of San Pedro was built in the 13th century and extensively remodelled in the 16th century in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Its 13th-century pointed-arch portal has three archivolts and diamond-point decoration. The archivolts form the arch layers of the portal; the diamond points add a geometric ornament. The main altarpiece was completed in 1616. The church thus displays distinct stages of construction and decoration.
Palacio de Galdeano
The Palacio de Galdeano is a Renaissance building dating from the 16th century. Its entrance has Gothic features, and the Galdeano family coat of arms is displayed on the façade. Historically, the Palacio was the ancestral home of the Galdeano lineage and was designated a cabo de armería. The Gothic details sit alongside the Renaissance architecture; the coat of arms and former function reflect its family connections. The exterior can be visited freely and free of charge, but the interior is accessible only to hotel or restaurant guests. Check these access conditions again before visiting.
Nature, climbing and festival dates
In 2014, the rare beetle Osmoderma eremita was found in an old oak pasture near Galdeano. The Paredones de Galdeano in the Sierra de Lóquiz are designated as an area of interest for climbing. Find out about local conditions before a climbing trip. Galdeano’s patron saint festivities in honour of San Pedro take place on 29 June. Specific festival programmes can vary from year to year; check the latest dates when planning a future trip.
