Romanesque church and main altarpiece
The Iglesia de la Purificación de Nuestra Señora follows a late 12th-century Romanesque ground plan. Historical records of Berrioplano date back to the 13th century. The church’s architectural form and the records about the town thus point to different periods. A portico with two pointed arches opens on the south side. The rectangular, single-nave church is about 17 metres long and 6.15 metres wide; it is divided into three sections of unequal size and ends in a semicircular apse. The nave is the elongated main part of a church; single-nave means that it has only one nave. An apse is the semicircular end of this space. The main altarpiece was created in 1629 by Domingo de Lusa and Martín de Echeverría. The late 12th-century architectural form and the 1629 altarpiece make two different periods visible within the church. The portico on the south side features pointed arches; at the end of the nave, by contrast, the apse forms a semicircular end.
Festivals throughout the year
On 15 May, Berrioplano celebrates its patron saint festival in honour of San Isidro. On 1 November, the Castañé tradition is observed, with roasted chestnuts to sample. The annual calendar thus includes two different occasions: a patron saint festival and a chestnut tasting. If you are planning a visit around either date, check the programme for that year in advance.
