Isaba: Culture, History and Trails
Accommodation in Isaba
Isaba offers several distinct themes to help you plan your trip: the history of the Roncal Valley, church art, hiking, cycling and nature. For the trails, specific details about distance and walking time help you estimate how much time to allow; recurring events have set dates. You can therefore plan your stay according to whether you want to make more time for culture, a tour or a special occasion.
Cultural history and recurring events
The Casa de la Memoria Museum presents the history and way of life of the people of the Roncal Valley and displays, among other things, traditional costumes from the valley. Isaba is also home to the fortified Church of San Cipriano, built from ashlar stone in the 15th century. Its furnishings include a 1537 altarpiece in the Plateresque style and a Baroque organ dated 1751. These two works of art reflect different periods: the altarpiece was created in the 16th century, while the organ dates from the 18th century.
Remains of a former castle that once dominated the town can be found in the upper part of Isaba. Recurring events also evoke the history of the area. The DĂa de la Indumentaria Roncalesa takes place every year in August and stages various episodes from the history of Isaba and the Roncal Valley. The Tributo de las Tres Vacas is held every year on July 13 at boundary marker 262 on the summit of Piedra de San Martin. Isaba leads the participating towns of the Roncal Valley, together with Uztarroz, Urzainqui and Garde. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the exact event dates in advance.
Hiking trails and planning your time
The municipality of Isaba has an extensive network of marked and officially certified hiking trails that can be used year-round. The network includes the 14.6-kilometre Isaba–Belagua–Arrakogoiti route, for which a walking time of 5 hours and 21 minutes is given. The SL Idoia trail is considerably shorter, at 2.1 kilometres, with a walking time of 60 minutes. These two time estimates help you distinguish a longer hike from a route that takes less time, without implying anything about difficulty.
Another landmark is the Ermita de Idoia, about one kilometre from Isaba; the GR-11 hiking trail passes through the area. This is a distance, not a walking-time estimate. The Camino de Zemeto runs alongside the Larra Nature Reserve, through karst landscapes and extensive pastures, to the Larra-Belagua viewpoint.
Cycling, nature and winter sports
The Larra Belagua MTB Centre has 18 marked routes in the Roncal Valley, covering a total of 160 kilometres of roads and trails. These include routes in Isaba and Belagua. The Larra-Belagua Enduro route has its own specific details: it starts in Isaba, is 20.67 kilometres long, is rated as highly difficult and finishes back in Isaba. Its length, start and end points, and difficulty rating give you a precise overview of the route.
The Aztaparreta Integral Nature Reserve is located in Isaba. Its ecologically notable habitats include beech, fir and black pine forests on limestone. Species found in the area include the black woodpecker, white-backed woodpecker, red deer, chamois and roe deer. Another winter sports destination, the Larra Belagua Nordic Ski Centre, is 22 kilometres from Isaba at Puerto de Belagua, at an altitude of 1,600 metres. It offers more than 20 kilometres of skiable pistes. Check conditions and whether the centre is open before you travel.

It also includes a tasting of three varieties aged for different lengths of time, served with artisan bread from the region. The stated period for 2026 runs from January 1 to December 31. Confirm your booking and availability in advance if you plan to include this visit in your trip.
