Olazagutía offers different points of interest for your stay: a large fortified church, archaeological traces, buildings reflecting traditional production and industrial history, and the Sierra de Urbasa. Road and rail links also shape how you get there. If you are looking for a hotel in Olazagutía, you can first consider whether cultural history, nature or the town’s transport connections are the main focus of your trip.

San Miguel: Fortified Church and Altarpiece

The parish church of San Miguel Arcángel is a large 16th-century fortified church in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Few openings, machicolations and straight walls articulated by buttresses define the building. The polygonal apse and massive, box-like forms give the church a defensive appearance. Its architecture can be understood through specific features: the articulated walls, the machicolations and the apse.

The presbytery contains a proto-Baroque altarpiece, most of which was made in the first third of the 17th century. Twisted columns, friezes with scrollwork and several gables structure the altar. Its five panels across two tiers and the upper section feature reliefs of Saint Michael, the Nativity of Christ and the Annunciation. They are joined by depictions of the two Johns, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Michael, the Assumption of Mary and the Crucifixion of Christ. San Miguel thus brings together a fortified architectural form and a richly structured program of imagery.

Archaeological Traces and Historic Routes

Koskobilo I is a site in Olazti that no longer exists and is considered the oldest Quaternary site in Navarre. Animals identified there include rhinoceroses, macaques and Tibetan black bears. The Koskobilo site represents the oldest documented evidence of human presence in the town; this includes remains from the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic. The two archaeological subjects relate to different periods and finds: animal remains from a Quaternary site on the one hand, and early traces of human activity on the other.

The chapel of Nuestra Señora de Belén offers another historical perspective. It lies along the route of the former Roman road from Bordeaux to Astorga, and archaeological finds have been made in its vicinity. This adds an earlier road route and further finds around the chapel to the prehistoric archaeological contexts.

Lime Kiln and Industrial History

La Calera is a restored 19th-century lime kiln and is considered the only one of its kind in Navarre. The kiln is also associated with the revival of the local rural Carnival tradition. The history of traditional lime production adds a different focus to the town’s history from the religious architecture of San Miguel.

The Clinker Club is a building constructed in 1964 and designed as a leisure facility associated with the cement works. It is set in a natural environment. Together with La Calera, the building represents two different aspects of the town’s history: traditional production and a leisure facility associated with the cement works.

The Sierra de Urbasa and Getting There

The Sierra de Urbasa is an extensive nature park with beech forests and meadows. The Puerto Viejo and the area around Salto de Aguas are key landmarks for access. This natural area differs in character from the buildings and archaeological traces in Olazagutía: here, the focus is on woodland and meadow landscapes.

Transport links are also part of finding your way around the town. Olazti/Olazagutía is a major transport hub where the A-1 and A-10 motorways meet. Railway lines connect the town with the provinces of the Basque Country. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your specific travel date.
