After the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the subsequent series of accidents at Fukushima nuclear power plant several hotel chains in the world were forced to adjust its hotel policy in the Land of the Rising Sun. Today a number of hotels in Japan, especially in Tokyo, are forced to close its doors due to the energy crisis and fears of raising the level of radiation.

Currently, according to the representatives of the hotel industry in Tokyo, published by the Agence France-Presse, the occupancy rate of hotels in Tokyo is less than 40%, while the ordinary figure for this time of the year is 2 times higher.

It is noted that the greatest losses suffer chains, which are oriented for American and European clientele. Residents of Tokyo from these regions began to leave en masse after the Tokyo earthquake on 11 March 2011.

In particular, its intention to suspend reservations announced Tokyo hotel Shangri-La. The press release says the hotel has temporarily suspended room reservation due to the problems with logistics and energy supply. The hotel is closed until at least April 16.

Three hotels of the Accor chain in Tokyo - Mercure Hotel Ginza Tokyo, Mercure Hotel Narita and Mercure Hotel Yokosuka - continue their work. There are placed those, who because of transport disruptions in Tokyo are temporarily unable to leave. However, hotel reservation is suspended.

Hotels of the Tokyo Disneyland will open as soon as Disneyland will return to normal work. The main problem is shortages of electricity supply. Also the park is slightly damaged by the earthquake. Currently the hotel complex in the Maihama district is temporarily closed. Hotels in close proximity to the Disneyland (Hilton Tokyo Bay, Sheraton Grande Tokyobay and others) offer their services in full or partial range.

Japanese hotel chains - JAL Hotels and Prince Hotels & Resorts - also cannot offer their full range of services. So, Prince Hotels & Resorts closed only one of its 48 hotels in the Iwata prefecture. Only one of the three JAL Hotels in Tokyo was not closed – Aomori hotel.

Starwood Hotels has yet announced about temporary closing of only one of its hotels - Westin Sindai. All other hotels of the network continue its work.

Several hotels of the Hyatt hotel chain, including the Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt in the luxurious district of the New Otani, closed their restaurants and bars.
