Entering of Spanish hotel chain AC Hotels to the Marriott International hotel corporation has become one of the most significant events on the European, and global hotel market. Marriott International, which presence in Spain before the merger was fairly modest - 8 hotels - from beginning of cooperation with AC Hotels was able to expand its portfolio in ten times, up to 80 hotels.

AC Hotels hotel chain was founded in 1998. Over 12 years of its activity in the market the company was able to accumulate big portfolio, and even go beyond Spain. AC Hotels today can be found not only in Spain, but also in neighboring Portugal and Italy. AC Hotels are mainly presented in large cities. Prior to the contract with Marriott AC Hotels has been one of the largest hotel chains in Spain along with NH hotels, Sol Melia and Barcelo hotels.

AC Hotels by Marriott is the name of the new brand that would become a launching pad for the Marriott as part of the expansion on European and Latin American markets.

Some hotels of AC Hotels by Marriott received a special mark in the Marriott chain. So, 10 hotels of AC Hotels were included in the Autograph Collection of luxury hotels. Among them are such hotels as AC Baqueira Hotel & Spa at the famous Baqueira Spain ski resort, as well as AC Santo Mauro five-star hotel in an old mansion in the heart of Madrid, according to Reuters.

Expansion through the acquisition of mid-size hotel chains has become a key trend for many large companies. Currently Starwood Hotels and InterContinental Hotels Group are looking for partners among the independent hotel chains to expand its market presence in Europe.
