The town’s art history is linked to the IFA and a former annual art gathering; Ebogo adds activities in the forest and on the water. The Centre region also offers its own broader cultural and landscape setting.

Art History and Culture in Mbalmayo

In 1990, COE opened the IFA – Institut de Formation Artistique in Mbalmayo. The IFA organized its training into three disciplines: ceramics, painting, and sculpture. This classification ranges from ceramic work and painting to sculptural design, grounding the art-historical perspective in a specific institution. An annual art gathering brought established artists and emerging talents together in Mbalmayo and ended in 2001. The IFA and the gathering each had a different emphasis: the institute represented specialized training, while the gathering brought experienced artists and newcomers together.

Nature Experiences in Nearby Ebogo

Nearby Ebogo is 18 km from Mbalmayo and lies in the municipality of Mengueme. Visitors can hike along a botanical forest trail, fish using traditional or sport-fishing methods, and observe wild birds and insects. These activities offer different points of interest: the forest trail combines hiking with botanical exploration, while fishing and wildlife observation appeal to other interests. Canoe trips go to the So’o River’s mouth or to the thousand-year-old tree, which is 12 meters in diameter.

A 35 km canoe trip from Mbalmayo to Ebogo along the Nyong is also described. The 18 km distance places Ebogo nearby; the 35 km refers to the river route. The figures thus answer different questions: where Ebogo is located and how long the described canoe trip is.

Getting Your Bearings in the Town Center

The Complexe Touristique Ngbwa Ella is in the center of Mbalmayo, right next to Rocher Vimli, and covers approximately 20 hectares. Its location and area provide two different points of reference: the location places the site within the town, while the area indicates its approximate size.

Regional Culture and Landscape in Centre

In the broader Centre destination, Mont Fébé, the Nyong, the Monument de la Réunification, and Parc national de la Méfou are among the main tourist attractions. The selection includes mountain and river scenery as well as a monument and a national park, broadening the perspective on culture and nature in the region.

Centre is also home to the Tunnels ferroviaires de Njock: three tunnels were carved by hand into the Liaa rock massif. They are a striking testament to forced labor and the slave system organized in the territory of Cameroon. The structure and its historical context offer a distinct perspective on this regional cultural subject.

Yaoundé is home to two museums with different focuses. The Musée Ethnographique des peuples de la forêt explores the history and culture of forest peoples through a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions, and a festival. The Musée national in Yaoundé is itself one of the main tourist attractions in the Centre region. The museums can thus be distinguished by their focus: the ethnographic museum emphasizes its subject and exhibition formats, while the Musée national is notable for its regional significance as an attraction.
