Southwest can be explored through a range of travel interests: Bimbia represents the heritage of the slave trade, while Limbe combines botanical history with wildlife and a bathing environment described by the city. At Mount Cameroon, two named lodges offer specific connections to altitude and landscape. So, when planning your trip, the first question is whether heritage, nature watching or elevation should define your stay.

Bimbia: History and Heritage

The former slave port of Bimbia and its associated sites are a unique testament to a painful period in African history. Material remains and oral traditions bear witness to this history. Bimbia is described as a site of slave-trade heritage in Limbe; Bimbia and its associated sites are listed on the UNESCO Tentative List. The historic site was designated national heritage under a 2013 national heritage decree.

Limbe Between Garden and Sea

Limbe Botanical Garden was established in 1892. According to the city’s description, the warm, calm sea and refreshing sea breeze provide good conditions for swimming throughout the day. The two details offer different perspectives for planning a trip: the garden is placed in historical context through its founding year, while the description of the sea focuses on swimming.

Wildlife and Nature Club

At the Limbe Wildlife Centre, the public can see rescued wild animals undergoing rehabilitation. Confirm the current visitor arrangements before your visit. The centre also invites children aged six to 16 to its Nature Club on Saturdays. The offerings differ in format: public encounters with animals undergoing rehabilitation sit alongside a Saturday activity for children.

Locations on Mount Cameroon

Fako Mountain Lodge is located at an altitude of 2,800 m on the main hiking trail from Buea to the summit of Mount Cameroon. Mann’s Spring Lodge is at 2,300 m, where forest gives way to savannah, and offers panoramic views. The stated elevations differ by 500 m; their location references also differ: Fako is situated in relation to the hiking trail, while Mann’s Spring is described in terms of the transition between landscapes and its views.

Cameroon in a Broader Natural Context

The wider travel region of Cameroon offers another natural setting in Korup. Korup National Park is considered a forest conservation area in the Southwest Region, with rare plants and animals. The Korup Biosphere Reserve in Cameroon’s Southwest Region is characterised by evergreen lowland forest; its landscapes range from foothill and swamp forests to submontane slopes on granite peaks. The reserve is home to the endangered Cross River gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli) and the critically endangered Preuss’s red colobus (Piliocolobus preussi). In Cameroon, Lobéké National Park is also part of the Sangha Trinational complex, one of three interconnected national parks.
