Borg El Arab Stadium is located near the destination. Since its establishment in 2007, it has hosted numerous local, African and international football competitions. The stadium was also the venue for Egypt’s historic qualification for the 2018 World Cup. Borg El Arab Sports Hall, meanwhile, hosted the Group H matches of the Men’s Handball World Championship on January 14, 16 and 18, 2021. The two sports venues represent different sports and historical moments. If you are traveling for a specific match, check the event dates.

King Mariout and Abu Mina

King Mariout is considered an international winter resort and a center of Arab tourism because of its dry climate. The area also contains archaeological evidence from the Pharaonic through the Islamic periods.

Abu Mina is about 50 km from Alexandria. The site includes a church, several archaeological buildings and two small churches, and dates to the 4th century AD. Visits are prohibited during Lent.

Alexandria as a Broader Travel Destination

Alexandria is a coastal city and port on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. Air-conditioned trains are one option for a scenic trip between Cairo and Alexandria.

The Royal Jewelry Museum displays pieces from the Egyptian royal family’s collection; the palace combines European and Islamic architectural styles. The Alexandria National Museum displays sunken antiquities recovered during excavations in Abu Qir Bay. The Greco-Roman Museum specializes in Greco-Roman civilization. A renovation project planned to display around 20,000 artifacts from the Greek and Roman periods there. Check its current opening status before visiting.

The Citadel of Qaitbay stands on the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Kom al-Dikka features a remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheater; the theater complex includes public baths, lecture halls and a villa decorated with mosaics. Kom al-Shoqafa is a Roman catacomb near Alexandria’s Serapeum. The Column of Diocletian stands on the site of the Serapeum and is often, but incorrectly, called “Pompey’s Pillar.” The Al-Anfoushi Tombs, also known as the Al-Anfoushi Necropolis, offer insight into ancient Ptolemaic burial practices.

The Montazah Gardens are extensive, lush botanical gardens that once belonged to the royal family of Muhammad Ali Pasha. They include two historic palaces, a museum and a series of private beaches. Visitors can stroll through Antoniadis Villa and its gardens, which were designed after a miniature version of Versailles in France. Visitors can dine at one of Alexandria’s fish restaurants.
