Ras El-Bar: Beach, Nile and Al-Lisan
Accommodation in Ras El-Bar
Ras El-Bar is a Mediterranean destination, with Al-Lisan as a distinctive landmark at the Nile estuary. Here, the Nile’s fresh water meets the Mediterranean’s salt water. This puts both the coast and the meeting of river and sea in the spotlight in Ras El-Bar.
Al-Lisan and the Nile Estuary
Tourists visit Al-Lisan and the Nile estuary in Ras El-Bar to take photos and observe the boundary between river and sea. If you are interested in the location, this very point, where the two bodies of water meet, is a central attraction.
Beaches and Extent
A report dated December 2, 2024, lists nine beaches stretching about three kilometers from the area behind the sea inlet to the southwestern part of the city. The description gives an idea of how many beach sections the city covers and in which direction they are spread.
A 2024 field survey puts the average beach width at 60 meters. At the narrowest points, it is at least 40 meters; in some places, it reaches 120 meters. As beach measurements can change over time, treat these figures as a guide.
Promenade, Culture and Planned Facilities
In August 2026, the Roman Theater at Al-Lisan hosted public music and performance events as part of the “Art Beach” program. This August program is a past event, not an ongoing event calendar.
The project development completed in 2024 along the seafront corniche and promenade in the Al-Lisan area included a theater for 750 people and a 700-meter bicycle path around the promenade squares. An area of 7,000 square meters was planned for the corniche, with green spaces, amenities, and decorative seating. The tourist promenade in the Al-Lisan area was developed with shops and services.
The planned components also included a main restaurant area totaling 5,200 square meters. This included a 2,000-square-meter granite courtyard, green spaces and trees, and an upper courtyard with ramps for people with disabilities. Food trucks and parking areas were also part of the development project. These details describe project components; they do not guarantee that the facilities have been completed or are accessible today.
In the wider destination of Ad-Daqahliyya
Within the wider destination of Ad-Daqahliyya, the resort town of Gamasa lies in northern Dakahlīyah and stretches for 7.5 kilometers along the Mediterranean coast. Gamasa is described as having clear water, soft sand, and a high iodine content. This is a separate regional coastal attraction alongside Ras El-Bar’s beach and river features.
Historic sites also give the wider destination of Ad-Daqahliyya a different character. The Monastery of Saint Demiana in the village of Demiana in Markaz Bilqās comprises five churches, including an archaeological church in the Gothic style. The Al-Mawafi Mosque in Mansura was founded in 583 AH/1187 CE by as-Salih Najm ad-Din Ayyub. In the archaeological section of the Mansura Museum is Dar Ibn Luqman, a building constructed in 1218 overlooking the Nile, where Louis IX was held captive.
