Mandishah is located in the Bahariya Oasis and is part of its eastern group of villages. Bawiti lies about eight kilometres to the west; Mandishah and Zabu are no more than one kilometre apart. These figures help put the location in perspective: the distance to Bawiti is approximate, while the distance between Mandishah and Zabu is an upper limit.

Landscape and agriculture

Rocky sand hills can be found in parts of Mandishah. At the same time, agriculture in the village relied on groundwater both in earlier times and in the modern era. These two features highlight different aspects: the hills describe the terrain, while the reliance on groundwater shows continuity in agriculture’s foundations across different periods.

Dates are also among the area’s distinctive features. Some of the best-known date factories in the Bahariya Oasis are located in Mandishah. The eighth edition of the International Dates Festival was held for the first time in Giza Governorate in 2025, in the village of Mandisha in the centre of the Bahariya Oasis. In different ways, the date factories and the festival connect the village’s name with date cultivation and its importance to the oasis.

Archaeological traces and history

In the Mandisha area, antiquities are found mainly around cultivated land and ancient springs. The area is also associated with Roman antiquities; historical accounts mention aqueducts in Mandisha. Water thus appears in two different contexts: as the basis for agriculture and in accounts of historic structures.

Gabal al-Ingleez lies between Mandishah and Bawiti. The mountain got its name because English troops gathered there during the British occupation of the oasis. The story behind the name links its location to a specific episode in the oasis’s history.

One archaeological site in the surrounding area is Siqam B in Qabala, which is associated with the village of Mandisha. The site was designated archaeological land in 2023. It covers 32 feddans, 14 qirats and 20.9 sahms, equivalent to 137,029.50 square metres, and contains numerous archaeological traces as well as visible rock-cut tombs.

The Ain Abu al-Ezz archaeological site is also associated with the village of Mandisha in the centre of the Bahariya Oasis in Giza Governorate. It covers 11 feddans and 3 qirats and was placed under Egypt’s Antiquities Protection Law No. 117 of 1983, including its amendments and executive regulations. This protection decision was reported in January 2017.

Activities in the wider Bahariya Oasis

The Bahariya Oasis offers a broader setting for regional activities. In the Al-Bahariyya region, you can explore villages, springs, palm groves, orchards and historic sites by bicycle. Also in the region, a hike leads to Gabal Maghrafa, a mountain known for the dinosaur fossils discovered there. These activities relate to the Al-Bahariyya region and complement the closer connections to Mandishah.

Mandishah also has a local health centre; the listed telephone number is 38496075.
