Woleu: History and regional impressions
Accommodation in Woleu
Mimbeng is a historical landmark near Woleu. The site was classified as a historic site after the Second World War; Gabon and France erected a memorial there in September 2007. The chronology distinguishes the postwar classification from the later construction of the memorial. Mimbeng’s history is thus linked to a specific, dated act of remembrance. A broader look at Woleu-Ntem complements this local connection with themes of landscape, culture, and cuisine.
Mimbeng: History and remembrance
The Mémorial de Mimbeng commemorates French, Senegalese, Cameroonian, German, and Gabonese soldiers, as well as the Indigenous population, who lost their lives in the fierce fighting. Two aspects should be distinguished: Gabon and France erected the memorial, while its commemoration encompasses soldiers from five countries and the Indigenous population.
Woleu-Ntem: Landscape and regional impressions
Mont Nkôo is located in Canton Bissok in the province of Woleu-Ntem. As a named mountain, it adds a landscape perspective to the historical focus. The geographical levels differ: Mimbeng is near the destination of Woleu, while Mont Nkôo is part of the wider travel region of Woleu-Ntem. This distinction helps separate local points of interest from regional themes when considering which part of the destination you would like to focus on.
The third edition of the Caravane touristique du pays also belongs to this regional context. It took place from July 17 to September 6, 2026, in Grand Nord (Woleu-Ntem Province). During a visit by the participants to Oyem, they discovered the Grotte mariale. In Oyem, they also visited a place affectionately called « La Principauté de Monaco ». The caravan thus offers a dated look at different points of interest in Oyem: a grotto and a place known by its nickname. “Caravane touristique du pays” roughly means “the country’s tourist caravan.”
Bitam adds a culinary connection to the same regional context: at the cultural highlight of the 2026 caravan, participants discovered and appreciated Manioc Agnizok there. In a thematic comparison, Oyem leads to two places visited, while Bitam is associated with a named cassava dish. The regional examples thus range from landscapes and specific places visited to a food that participants particularly appreciated.
