Nature among lakes and volcanic formations

Baringo County offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: hot springs and geysers, islands in Lake Baringo, flamingos at Lake Bogoria, and museums with cultural exhibits. First, consider what interests you most: geological features and lakes, nature destinations, or history and culture. That way, you can shape your stay around the experiences that matter most to you.

At Lake Bogoria, hot springs and geysers are among the area’s tourist features; flamingos on the lake are also among the county’s attractions. There are also hot springs at Cheparuas/Kapedo. These places represent different aspects of Baringo’s geothermal attractions. If these features are of particular interest to you, you can take them into account when planning your trip alongside the other natural and cultural destinations.

Ol Kokwa Island offers a different geological perspective: the island is the summit of a submerged shield volcano formed by repeated lava flows. Hot springs and fumaroles occur in its northern part. The island therefore showcases both its volcanic formation and visible geothermal features. Together with the springs and geysers at Lake Bogoria, it offers a concrete comparison between volcanic formation and geothermal phenomena.

Lake Baringo is also a destination for exploring by water. The lake has seven islands that attract visitors for exploration safaris; islands are visited as part of boat trips. If you would like to plan such a trip, check the current options in advance. This lets you make exploring the islands a considered part of your travel plans without having to plan your other destinations around it.

The county’s tourist attractions include Lake Kamnarok National Reserve, Lake Bogoria National Reserve and Cheploch Gorge. Together with the lakes, islands and geothermal features, they expand the range of nature-focused options. Lake Bogoria is also associated with its flamingos, hot springs and geysers; the two national reserves and the gorge are additional, distinct destinations among the attractions.

Museums and cultural insights

The Kabarnet Museum focuses on cultural exhibits of the Tugen, Ilchamus, Pokot and Keiyo. The museum also has indigenous trees that live for more than 100 years. They provide a habitat for various bird species. Culture and nature therefore meet here in different forms: in the exhibits and in the habitat provided by the trees.

The Kipsaraman Museum offers insights into Tugen history and culture; visitors can view traditional artefacts there. The two museums have different focuses: the Kabarnet Museum displays exhibits from several cultural groups, while Kipsaraman highlights Tugen history and culture. If you would like to visit one of the museums, check the current visiting options in advance.

Fit experiences into your travel plans

Irong Community Conservancy has a campsite from which visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Kormoson Hill and Lake Bogoria. If camping is an option for you, check in advance whether the site is available during your travel dates. This is a separate option alongside trips to lakes, islands and museums.

When choosing where to stay, you can organize your trip around your interests: volcanic formations and springs, boat trips and islands, nature destinations, or cultural collections. Decide which of these themes you want to focus on and use it as a starting point for planning the rest of your trip in Baringo County.
