Kwale combines coastal scenery and islands with protected areas, diverse wildlife and historically significant sites. When planning a stay, it helps to organise these themes around your interests: sea and beach, nature watching or cultural history. The coastal towns, protected areas and historic sites offer different starting points for exploring them.

Coast, Islands and Activities on the Water

In Kwale County, a 17-kilometre stretch of fine white sandy beach extends through Diani, Msambweni, Shirazi, Funzi, Shimoni, Wasini and Kisite Tidal Island. The county includes a total of 20 islands, four of which are inhabited: Wasini, Funzi, Mzizima and Chale. Wasini and Funzi are therefore included both in the list of locations along the beach stretch and among the inhabited islands. This overlap provides a specific starting point if you would like to explore coastal and island themes together.

Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve is associated with snorkelling, diving, swimming with dolphins and sunbathing. The travel picture thus includes both a described stretch of beach and activities in and around the water. This is a helpful distinction when planning: you can focus more on the coastal scenery or on water-based experiences.

Forest, Wildlife and Nature Experiences

Protected areas in Kwale County include Shimba Hills National Park Reserve. Shimba Hills National Reserve is a coastal forest with rich flora and fauna; according to the Kenya Wildlife Service, it is home to the highest density of African elephants in Kenya. Sheldrick Falls and Mwaluganje Forest are located in the reserve. Here, forest landscapes and wildlife sit alongside named natural features.

Birdlife is also part of the natural landscape: the forest has forest bird species, while the grassland is home to local birds such as Red-necked Spurfowl, Croaking Cisticola and Zanzibar Red Bishop. Their presence may vary by season. The county plan lists birdwatching, sightseeing, photography, camping, nature walks to Sheldrick Waterfalls and botanical research among the uses of Shimba Hills National Park Reserve. The range therefore extends from observing wildlife and plants to activities in the landscape.

Historic Sites and Community Tourism Projects

Historically significant sites in Kwale County include Fikirini Caves, Mwanangoto Caves in Shimoni, Kongo Mosque in Ukunda, Lwayo La Mlungu in Mwereni, Nyumba Ya Hoe in Kilibasi, Vanga Ruins, Jumba la Mbaruku in Gazi and Komboza Caves in Diani. The list ranges from caves and ruins to a mosque, forming a distinct focus alongside the coast and nature.

Tourism sites named in the county include Gazi Boardwalk in Kinondo, Wasini Women Boardwalk in Vanga and the Sable bandas in Shimba Hills. The Kaya Kinondo eco-tourism project in Kinondo is a community-led ecotourism project. Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary in Kinango is a community conservancy and, according to the county plan, is currently used for tourism activities. These examples complement the landscape and cultural themes with community projects and other named tourism sites.
