Fenfushi can be understood as a travel destination especially through its architectural heritage and maritime connections. The historic Friday Mosque, other old structures, and the surrounding South Ari Marine Park offer different points of interest to consider when planning a stay on the island.

The Friday Mosque: Architecture and History

Fenfushi Friday Mosque has a hypostyle plan, a mihrab chamber, and three entrances with ascending steps. A hypostyle layout is one in which columns support the roof. The mosque was built between 1692 and 1701 AD during the reign of Sultan Mohamed of Dhevvadhu. It was built on the site of an earlier mosque erected by Kallhukamanaa. The construction period and predecessor building mark two distinct historical phases: the date applies to the Friday Mosque; the earlier mosque was its predecessor on the same site.

The mosque complex includes a sundial, a large cemetery with high-quality gravestones, and a coral masonry boundary wall with two entrances. The Friday Mosque is considered the only mosque with a complete set of components within its complex. The site is complemented by a unique coral-stone basin for ritual ablutions. The design of the basin steps suggests that it was probably built during the Buddhist era. The mosque's recorded construction date should therefore be distinguished from the basin's probable date.

Other Historical Sites

Tharaagandu is also one of the island's historical features: it is an ancient ruin. Fenfushi also preserves the remains of a small mosque made of coral stone and lime mortar. Vegetation obscures these remains, so their visibility can vary. The Friday Mosque, Tharaagandu, and the hidden mosque remains offer different aspects of the island's architectural and local history and should not be combined into a single building complex.

Sea, Reef, and Nature

Fenfushi is one of the local islands that face the South Ari Marine Park. Marine park boundaries and visitor regulations can change; check the latest information about the area before making specific plans. A protected reef includes Fenfushi, Maamigili, and Huruelhi. Older environmental documentation names Fenfushi Kanduolhi as a place where large fish species can be observed; sightings and access may change. A 2012 environmental assessment recorded undisturbed coral areas on Fenfushi's southern reef. Two large banyan trees were also documented in an older island assessment. These observations about nature, which are dated, add to the picture of the island, but they are not all equally current descriptions of the marine environment.

Getting There and Getting Around

The 2022 MTCC ferry schedule lists Route 304 between Fenfushi and Maamigili. Check current departures before your trip. Older transport observations also mention small boats operating between the two islands; check locally in advance to confirm current availability. Maamigili is nearby. Older transport information lists an airport there and regular sea connections to Malé. For travel planning, it is advisable to check current operating and travel schedules. Fenfushi has the Alifu Dhaalu Fenfushi Health Centre.
