Omadhoo combines diving and snorkeling with tropical island nature and cultural experiences. The range of activities gives you concrete ways to decide whether the island fits your travel plans.

Location and Getting Around Omadhoo

Omadhoo is located in the center of Southern Ari, known to locals as Alif Dhaal; Malé International Airport is about 65 kilometers away. A scheduled speedboat connects the island to Malé and Velana International Airport. The journey takes approximately one and a half hours. As departure times may change, check the schedule before traveling. Everything on Omadhoo is within a short walk.

Diving and Snorkeling

Omadhoo Dive Tours is a PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Center on Omadhoo and offers personalized diving and snorkeling instruction. Courses range from Open Water Diver to PADI PRO training. First-time divers can take an introductory dive course with a PADI professional in one morning. If you have not dived for a long time or were recently certified with little experience, you can take a refresher dive.

Diving trips take place daily in the Omadhoo dive area. A maximum of four divers are assigned to each dive guide, and groups are limited to ten divers. Daily dive programs also include activities to protect local marine ecosystems, as well as a detailed safety and marine biology briefing. The meeting point for the programs is Omadhoo Harbor.

Snorkeling trips are also organized daily; they take place in the morning and afternoon, and sometimes at night. When snorkeling at the house reef, you can reach coral gardens with reef fish and nurse sharks from the beach. The reef around the island also offers underwater encounters with dolphins, manta rays and sharks.

Excursions in the Surrounding Area

Whale shark snorkeling in South Ari Atoll is offered from Omadhoo. Whale sharks are sighted in these waters year-round; confirm the availability of the excursion before traveling. Other trips go to nearby cleaning stations and reefs with manta rays and sea turtles. Conditions for these vary by season. Kayaking in a lagoon and dolphin cruises at dusk, when spinner dolphins are sought out, round out the activities on offer.

Island Nature and Local Experiences

More than half of Omadhoo is covered in tropical vegetation, including breadfruit trees and coconut palms. Many banyan trees and tropical palms also grow on the western side. You can relax on the visitors’ bikini beach, or watch fishermen bring their daily catch ashore.

Cultural experiences on Omadhoo include a Maldivian Night. Omadhoo Dive Tours also offers local handicraft workshops where you can learn about the traditional knowledge and skills of the Maldives. The experiences on offer give visitors the chance to sample traditional dishes and learn more about the culinary traditions of the archipelago. Night fishing and sunset fishing are offered using a traditional Maldivian handline; the catch can then be grilled.
