Meedhoo: Coral Stone Mosque and Eid Traditions
Accommodation in Meedhoo
Meedhoo brings together a distinctive building, Eid traditions, regional futsal, and a fishing practice passed down through generations. If you are looking for hotels in Meedhoo, these different highlights can help you choose a destination based on your interests.
Coral Stone Mosque and Historic Complex
The Meedhoo Old Friday Mosque is the only surviving coral stone mosque with Indian roof tiles. It is about 300 years old; according to local oral tradition, it was probably built around 1705. The exact period of construction is unclear. The complex includes the mosque building, two water wells, a cemetery, and a mausoleum. The historic site thus includes not only the prayer house but also wells and burial grounds.
Eid Traditions and Crafts
Bodu Mas is a Maldivian Eid tradition: a giant fish figure made from woven coconut palm leaves is ceremonially carried through the island. Maali Neshun, by contrast, puts performers at the center. They portray mythical figures and spirits, wear handmade costumes made from coconut leaves and local materials, and are accompanied by Boduberu drums.
Vedhuma Dhiyun is a long-standing Eid tradition in Raa Atoll Meedhoo. Before the festivities begin, island residents formally seek permission from community leaders and village elders. Koadi Kendun is a traditional community event featuring a decorated wooden structure made from coconut palm materials.
Crafts and food are also part of the experiences described for visitors: During a Visit Maldives program in Meedhoo in 2023, participants could learn traditional crafts such as weaving reeds or straw. A traditional Malaafaiy featuring numerous Maldivian dishes was also part of a visitor program on the island in 2023.
RaaBadhi Challenge and Local Fishing
The RaaBadhi Challenge takes place every year in Raa Atoll Meedhoo and attracts participants and spectators from across the region. Raa Meedhoo Jamiyyathuh Solah founded the tournament in 2019; it is considered the largest futsal tournament in Raa Atoll. Each edition includes a group stage, followed by knockout rounds and a grand final. Both its regional significance and the tournament format are relevant to understanding sporting life on the island.
Reef fish are found in Meedhoo. The local fishing tradition includes a fishing crew catching live bait from the lagoon and fishing by hand and with handlines; this practice has been passed down through generations. A report published on December 23, 2025, and updated on January 27, 2026, also describes a full-day trip on a Mas Dhoni with a fishing crew from Meedhoo, from catching live bait to selling the catch.
