When planning a stay in Kenitra, it helps to understand how the area is laid out geographically: the Sebou and its banks are in the city; Maâmora and Sidi Boughaba are in the surrounding area, while Mehdia and the Atlantic coast broaden the picture to include the province. This makes it easier to decide whether to focus on urban walks, nature destinations or coastal activities.

Travel by Al Boraq

The Al Boraq high-speed train connects Casablanca and Tangier and stops at Kenitra station. If you plan to travel on this service, check the timetable for your travel date.

Walks and nature along the Sebou

The Corniche Sebou is a promenade along the banks of the Sebou in Kenitra. The riverbanks also offer space for walks and peaceful visits. This gives you two ways to enjoy the river: a walk along the named promenade or a quiet stay by the water. The Sebou near Kenitra is also a habitat for many migratory and resident bird species. The river thus combines urban riverside recreation with an ecological dimension; nature lovers will find this an additional point of interest alongside walking.

Leisure activities in Kenitra and the surrounding area

Waves Aqua Resort in Kenitra offers swimming pools, water slides and play areas for children and adults. This is clearly different from the more peaceful focus along the Sebou: here, the emphasis is on water and play areas, while the river offers walks and riverside scenery.

The Maâmora, an extensive cork oak forest, is close to the city. It offers opportunities for walks, picnics and outdoor activities. Maâmora complements the riverside promenade with woodland scenery and picnic spots.

Sidi Boughaba lies a few kilometres north of Kenitra and is an important Atlantic wetland for migratory and wintering waterbirds. It is also a wintering ground for the marbled teal. The two nearby nature destinations also differ in character: Maâmora is known for its cork oak forest and outdoor activities, while Sidi Boughaba is a wetland and a haven for waterbirds.

Coast and activities in Kenitra Province

The wider travel area includes 140 kilometres of Atlantic coastline and dense forests, particularly Maâmora, in Kenitra Province. At Plage de Mehdia in the province, regular waves and surf schools provide opportunities to learn and improve board sports skills. Bodyboarding and stand-up paddling are also practised there. Mehdia therefore offers a different focus from the riverfront in Kenitra: the coast is all about waves and board sports. If you are interested in these activities, you can include them as part of the wider travel area.

Thamusida and the history of the Sebou

Thamusida is located near Kenitra on the left bank of the Sebou and was designated an archaeological site in 2001. The Roman port of Thamusida on the Sebou supplied troops and was used to transport goods. The river can therefore be viewed not only as part of today’s landscape, but also in terms of its historical role in supplying troops and transporting goods.
