Tiznit Province: Medina, Silverware and Amazigh Culture
Accommodation in Tiznit Province
Tiznit Province brings together a variety of landscapes and cultural themes. Covering 9,463 km², the Anti-Atlas shapes the terrain in the east, while semi-arid plains lie to the west. Tiznit is known for its walled medina and silverware, the Ammeln Valley for Amazigh culture and walking trails, and Aglou adds surfing and a long seafront promenade to the mix. When choosing a hotel, it is worth first considering which of these highlights you want to shape your stay.
Tiznit: Medina and Silverware
The walls of Tiznit’s medina are 8 metres high, lined with 56 towers and pierced by 5 gates. The height, towers and gates describe different features of the fortifications: their vertical dimension, the divisions created by the towers, and the passages through the wall. This gives architecture enthusiasts a concrete view of the site. Tiznit is also the leading centre for silverware in Souss-Massa, followed by Taroudant and Agadir. If you are interested in silverware, Tiznit is therefore the clear highlight among these three places.
Amazigh Culture and Historic Sites
The Ammeln have lived in the Ammeln Valley for generations and form a large Amazigh tribe. The valley is a mountain oasis with diverse flora and fauna. You can walk along accessible, shaded paths between cultivated fields and wild gardens. Compared with Tiznit, the focus here shifts from city walls and silverware to Amazigh culture, the valley’s natural environment and walking trails.
Dar Iligh was the former seat of the ruler of the Semlali and is a carefully preserved, centuries-old building. Its former role as a ruler’s seat and the preserved structure give the site its own historical significance. The Painted Rocks near Tafraout appeal to a different cultural interest: they are considered unique works of art. Tiznit combines fortifications with silverware, Dar Iligh represents the former seat of a ruler, and the Painted Rocks are considered works of art. You can therefore decide which places to prioritise according to the theme that interests you most during your stay.
Surfing and Exploring Outdoors
You can surf in Aglou year-round, although conditions may vary by season. A long seafront promenade runs along the beach by Aglou’s main village and is ideal for walks; the beach also offers numerous facilities. In Aglou, you can choose between surfing and walking along the promenade as two different activities.
Jbel Lkest forms a natural boundary between Tiznit and Chtouka Ait Baha provinces. Its routes are not signposted, so visitors are strongly advised to go with a guide. This is a clear difference to bear in mind when planning routes, compared with the accessible, shaded walking paths in the Ammeln Valley.
