Coast and cultural connections

When looking for a hotel in Baie Sainte Anne, it can be helpful to consider the local themes. The curved coastline includes the beaches of Anse Madge, Anse L’amour, Anse Badamier, and Anse Lafarin.

Cultural connections include the names La Plaine Hollandaise Ruins and Sainte Anne Church, which are associated with Baie Ste Anne Praslin. The names refer to two different kinds of places: ruins and a church. When planning your own trip, you can compare the local coastal setting with these cultural places and decide which themes matter most to you when choosing a destination.

The wider Seychelles destination

The wider Seychelles destination encompasses a range of nature and culture themes across different islands. On Praslin, for example, Praslin National Park has several short trails; Glacis Noire is the only official trail. The park is home to endemic, native, and indigenous plant species, as well as a variety of insects and other animals. These include the Black Parrot, which is found only on Praslin and the surrounding islets.

Also on Praslin is the 19.5-hectare Vallée de Mai. It is one of the smallest natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world and the only area in the Seychelles where all six species occur together. The two Praslin locations have different points of focus: the national park is about trails and habitats, while Vallée de Mai is notable for its size and the presence of all six species together.

On Curieuse, a boardwalk on stilts passes through the swamp and provides access to the mangrove habitat even during high water. The mangrove swamp borders Baie Laraie. Curieuse was used as a quarantine site for people with leprosy for almost a hundred years. The landscape and history here offer two distinct themes: mangroves and the boardwalk on the one hand, and the island’s former use as a quarantine site on the other.

On Moyenne Island in Ste. Anne Marine National Park, there are remains of early settlers’ houses, pirate graves, and a small thatched chapel. Ste. Anne Marine Park comprises six islands.

On La Digue, Veuve Special Reserve covers 21 hectares and forms part of a 200-hectare plateau on the western side of the island. Reserve staff answer questions and help visitors find the birds. This brings together the area’s geographical setting and help with locating the birds.

The Seychelles’ marine parks are accessible by boat; Port-Launay can also be reached on foot. In Morne Seychellois National Park, the Anse Major Trail begins in Danzil Bel-Ombre and ends at Anse Major Beach. At the National Botanical Garden, visitors can feed giant tortoises. These examples illustrate the variety of nature and visitor experiences across the wider Seychelles destination.
