Bumthang: Temples, Pilgrimage Traditions and Yathra
Accommodation in Bumthang
Bumthang brings together topics you can consider separately when planning your trip: temple history, religious traditions, textile craftsmanship and a multi-purpose route geared toward mountain biking. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bumthang, first consider which of these is most important to your trip.
Temple History and Religious Traditions
Jambay Lhakhang is one of Bhutan’s oldest temples and was founded in the 7th century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. This early date provides a clear chronological anchor for Bumthang’s history. Jakar Dzong stands on a ridge above the village of Jakar in the Chamkhar Valley. Historically, the complex served as a defensive fortress for the east-central region and as the residence of Bhutan’s first king. These two functions link the dzong’s specific location with military defense and political history.
Religious traditions also shape the sites in Bumthang. At Kurjey Lhakhang, Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated in the 9th century and left a body imprint on a rock that is still visible today. Membartsho lies in the Tang Valley on the Tang Chhu and is considered one of Bhutan’s most important pilgrimage sites. Pema Linga is said to have discovered several hidden treasures of Guru Rinpoche there. Temple history and a pilgrimage tradition associated with a riverside site thus sit side by side.
Yathra and Weaving Traditions
The Chumey Valley in Bumthang is known for Yathra, a woolen fabric woven on a backstrap loom. Its material and weaving technique give the tradition a distinctive character. In the town of Chamkhar, the Dorjibi Weaving Centre was founded in 2011 to further develop the weaving tradition in the Bumthang Valley and explore new designs and technologies. This distinguishes two aspects of textile craftsmanship: the traditional production of Yathra in the Chumey Valley and the institutional development of weaving traditions in Chamkhar.
Planning Festivals and Activities
Every two years, on the 16th day of the first month of the Bhutanese calendar, Buli Lhakhang holds the Buli-Mani festival. Since the date follows this calendar, check the date for your travel year specifically. The biennial schedule is an important part of planning if the festival is one of the reasons for your trip.
The Bushman Trail is a multi-purpose trail designed primarily as a mountain biking route, connecting Jakar with the Tang Valley. It offers a different way to experience the area than its historic and religious sites: the focus here is on the connection between Jakar and the Tang Valley. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
