Maharashtra: Caves, the Western Ghats and Lonar Crater
Accommodation in Maharashtra
Maharashtra offers travelers a range of highlights: rock-cut caves, Western Ghats landscapes, a meteorite crater lake and a sea fort. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding which of these experiences interest you most.
Cave art and diverse traditions
The Ajanta Caves are a group of rock-cut caves in Maharashtra. Their paintings and sculptures are considered masterpieces of Buddhist religious art. Ellora offers a different architectural focus: the caves are located in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district and comprise 34 caves featuring Hindu, Buddhist and Jain architecture. The two sites can thus be distinguished by their respective artistic and religious themes.
Cave complexes with their own distinctive features can also be found near Mumbai. The Elephanta Caves are on Elephanta Island off the coast of Mumbai in Maharashtra. Visitors reach them by ferry from Mumbai’s Gateway of India. Cave 1 houses the seven-metre-tall Sadashiva sculpture, which depicts three aspects of Shiva. Check the current ferry schedule before setting out.
The Kanheri Caves are near Mumbai, in Sanjay Gandhi National Park. With 109 caves, they are among India’s largest Buddhist cave complexes and are designated a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. When comparing cave complexes, you can contrast Kanheri’s Buddhist character and scale with Ellora’s religiously diverse architectural ensemble or Ajanta’s Buddhist art.
The Western Ghats, forests and seasonal nature
The Western Ghats run through Maharashtra and are known for exceptionally high biodiversity and endemism. Mahabaleshwar is a hill station in Maharashtra’s Western Ghats, known for its lush greenery, mountains and quiet lakes. The Western Ghats ecosystem around Mahabaleshwar includes dense forests, medicinal plants, seasonal flowers and wildlife such as leopards, deer and wild boar. Alongside the caves, landscapes and biodiversity are therefore separate themes to consider when planning your trip.
One specific seasonal natural attraction is the Kaas Plateau, which bursts into bloom during the monsoon season. The hike to Torna Fort takes about three to four hours from the village of Velhe; conditions may vary by season. The Malabar giant squirrel also lives in the dense forests of the Bhimashankar region. These examples offer different perspectives on landscapes and wildlife, without describing the same kind of outing.
Safari, geology and the coast
Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is located in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district and covers 625.4 square kilometres. Its landscape ranges from rugged rocky cliffs and gently rolling meadows to lush forests and deep valleys. Visitors can go on jeep safaris; booking conditions may vary. If a safari is part of your plans, check the conditions in advance.
Lonar Crater in Buldhana district is a crater lake formed by a meteorite impact. On the coast, Sindhudurg Fort offers a different kind of destination: the sea fort lies off the coast of Malvan in Maharashtra. Scuba diving and snorkelling are possible in the waters around the fort. The experiences described are therefore quite distinct: from a crater lake to safari landscapes and activities in the sea.
Plan your arrival and base
Ajanta is well connected by road, rail and air. Ellora can be reached by bus, taxi, private vehicle and rail connections; convenient transport links to Ellora are available from Aurangabad’s main railway and bus stations.
When choosing a hotel location, you can first decide based on the focus of your trip: cave art at Ajanta, Ellora or near Mumbai; nature in the Western Ghats; a jeep safari in Tadoba; or the coastal destination of Sindhudurg. When planning, check the ferry times for Elephanta and, if relevant, the booking conditions for a safari. This way, you can base your hotel search on the experiences that are genuinely most important for your trip.
