Chaek lies in a narrow mountain valley surrounded by the steep ridges of the Inner Tian Shan. The entire Jumgal District is located in the Inner Tian Shan and features mountainous terrain above 2,000 metres. In Chaek, mountain scenery, regional history and an agricultural heritage come together; for planning your trip, both connections to Bishkek and Naryn and the variety of hiking and cycling routes are worth considering.

Mountain Scenery and Viewpoints

Several small alpine lakes lie in the surrounding area, including Beshkugandy Kol, Chontaash Kol and Sary Kol. Sary-Köl is a place to stop by a high-altitude lake, with hikes across alpine meadows and green passes. Higher elevations offer panoramic views. In the alpine lakes area, inexperienced hikers and climbers are advised to hire a local guide.

Panorama Hill offers views over the village of Chaek and the Jumgal Valley. The route there is considered an easy walk of about 30 minutes. It follows a rough road and passes Tagai Guesthouse and a local kok-boru field. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Getting There and Routes

Chaek is connected to Bishkek and Naryn by bus; check the current timetable before departure. The road from Tyuz-Ashuu Pass to Kochkor also runs through Chaek.

Various routes are listed for cyclists: a mountain bike route to Son-Kul via Kara-Keche Pass runs from Chaek to Tash-Dobo. Another cycling route descends through Kekemeren Canyon from Suusamyr to Chaek. Check current route conditions before setting off. In 2018, ten horse-riding routes and twelve hiking routes were also established for Destination Jumgal and included in an international tourist map.

Agriculture and Apple Festival

Chaek is known as an agricultural settlement, noted for fruit-tree cultivation and livestock farming. An autumn apple festival attracts farmers from different parts of Kyrgyzstan. If the festival fits your travel plans, check the current event dates in advance.

Museum, Mausoleums and Theatre

The Jumgal Regional History Museum focuses on significant figures from the region and houses objects and photographs of well-known residents. Check current opening hours before planning a visit. The Arab Mausoleums lie in the foothills north of Chaek. One possible historical interpretation sees Arabic inscriptions and stylized architecture as evidence that the mausoleums originated on the Silk Road in the 17th century; little is known about their past.

The Kalyk Akiev Musical Drama Theatre in Chaek was founded in 1937. In 2024, festive theatrical events were held there before an audience of 3,362. If you plan to visit, check the latest programme and access information.

Jumgal-Ata

The sacred site of Jumgal-Ata lies around seven kilometres east of Chaek. The site includes a mausoleum, springs, trees, a pilgrimage site and a mosque. Visitors pray there, stay overnight and drink water from the site; one place of prayer is called Kamyr. A visit offers insight into the site’s religious practices and its various features.
