High-altitude valley between the Tian Shan and Kyrgyz Range

Suusamyr is a high-altitude valley surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Tian Shan. It stretches approximately 100 kilometers from east to west and reaches up to 40 kilometers in width. The Kyrgyz Range runs along the valley, with peaks rising to 4,500 meters. The approximately 100-kilometer east-to-west length is about two and a half times the maximum width of 40 kilometers.

Paragliding: thermals and infrastructure

Season and weather are crucial for paragliding. From May to September, conditions generally offer strong thermals; the agreed upper limit is 5,000 meters. Thermals are rising air currents used in flight. This period provides a seasonal guide, not a forecast for individual days: conditions remain weather-dependent. The FlyKG paragliding base has rooms, a kitchen and grassy areas for landing and preparing wings. Check before your trip whether this infrastructure is available.

Rooms, yurts and culture

Turan Camp is located in the Suusamyr Valley and is an ethno-camp focused on Kyrgyz nomadic culture. It organizes horseback riding tours for visitors. Accommodation options include standard and upgraded rooms, as well as the option to stay in a shared yurt. Breakfast is included; lunch and dinner can be ordered from the menu.

Food and facilities in the valley

In the Suusamyr Valley, roadside yurts sell freshly baked bread, butter, kuurdak, kurut and kumys. Yurt tourism with an ethnocultural focus and newer glamping accommodations are also among the valley’s accommodation options. A roadside campsite in the rural area of Suusamyr has a shop, a pharmacy and a mother-and-child room. Recreation facilities in the village of Suusamyr welcome a growing number of foreign tourists. Yurts in the valley therefore serve different purposes: roadside yurts sell food, while yurt tourism with an ethnocultural focus is also an accommodation option. Glamping is another, newer form of accommodation.

Ski base and elevation

The Suusamyr ski base is in the Suusamyr Valley, at kilometer 158 of the Bishkek–Osh road, at an elevation of 2,260 meters. It offers freeriding in ungroomed snow with Snowcat support; check before your trip whether operations and equipment are currently available. The elevation figures refer to different points: the ski base is at 2,260 meters, while the peaks of the Kyrgyz Range reach up to 4,500 meters. The information about the activities addresses different planning questions: for paragliding, season and weather matter; for Snowcat freeriding, check current operations and equipment.
