Discover Aldarkhaan
Accommodation in Aldarkhaan
Aldarkhaan brings together cultural sites, archaeological history, and landscapes. These include historic monastery remains, human statues, and Mount Baruun Saikhan, which is designated as a habitat for various wild animals. Travel routes also offer guidance, placing Aldarkhaan within a sequence of regional stops. This allows you to consider cultural history, nature, and routes as different focuses when planning your trip.
Human Statues and Protected Monuments
The Mungut Khyasaa human statue monument is located at Bichigtin Bulag in Bag Bogdyn Gol, 21 kilometers east of Aldarkhaan. It is protected by the state as an immovable historical and cultural monument. The location makes its connection to Aldarkhaan specific, while its protected status describes the monument’s cultural and historical significance.
The Khoshootin Am human statue is also associated with a ritual enclosure. The figure wears a headdress and a belted deel, holding a cup in its right hand and a sword in its left. To its left stands a 3.5-meter-high ritual enclosure monument. The site is protected by the state as an immovable historical and cultural monument; it was added to the protection list in 2021.
Two more human statues are described at Jigstei Pass. One wears a patterned headdress and holds a cup in its right hand; weapons and a knife are depicted below the belt. The other holds a cup in its right hand and a sword in its left. When comparing the figures, the headdress, belt area, and hand positions provide specific points of reference.
Monastery and Archaeological Traces
Yaruugiin Kherüü Monastery had 17 temple buildings. Some sections of its outer earthen enclosure remain 2 to 3 meters high; where sections have collapsed, the foundations are 3 meters wide. The number of temples indicates the scale of the former monastery complex, while the enclosure’s dimensions offer a separate perspective on its architectural remains.
The numerous Xiongnu-era burial groups around Yamaan Us are considered evidence of an important settlement area. A large Xiongnu archaeological site was discovered there in 2022. It may be the tomb of a nobleman from the golden lineage of the Xiongnu Shanyu, who may have been a high-ranking representative of the western half of the empire. This interpretation links the archaeological site to a possible high-ranking burial, but remains an interpretation.
Cultural and natural sites in Aldarkhaan also include the Khuurugiin Am burial and kurgan complex, as well as the Khukh human statue, also known as Burdiin Tolgoi. These names add further cultural and historical sites in the area to the specific descriptions of Khoshootin Am and Yaruugiin KherĂĽĂĽ.
Protected Area and Landscape
The strictly protected Otgontenger area includes parts of Aldarkhaan and covers 192,748 hectares. Mount Baruun Saikhan is designated as a habitat for snow leopards, ibex, and forest ungulates. The protected area and the individual mountain represent different spatial scales: the area figure refers to Otgontenger, while the named animal species relate to Baruun Saikhan.
In 2018, a documented outing by students from an eco-club followed a 3-to-4-kilometer footpath up Mount Baruun Saikhan to an area where ibex stay. Together with the habitat information, this earlier outing offers two different perspectives on the mountain: its designated importance as a habitat and a documented route taken in a specific context at the time.
Routes and Regional Orientation
A 140-kilometer travel route passes through several stops, including the rest area at Yamaan Us and Aldarkhaan, before reaching Uliastai. Another route leads from Uliastai via Bogdyn Gol and Mungut Khyasaa. The two descriptions differ in their starting points and courses: the first places Aldarkhaan within a longer sequence of stops, while the second names Bogdyn Gol and Mungut Khyasaa as waypoints on a route from Uliastai. For your planning, these locations provide an overview of different route connections without combining them into a single sequence.
