Discover Yangon: Architecture, Pagodas and River Views
Accommodation in Yangon
Yangon can be explored during a stay based on a range of interests. In the city centre, colonial-era buildings and walks take centre stage; the Yangon Circular Railway offers insights into the everyday lives of city residents. Other attractions include Bogyoke Market, People’s Park, river cruises and several pagodas. You can tailor your trip to a particular theme—architecture, a market visit, religious sites or views from the water.
Colonial-era Buildings and City History
Numerous colonial-era buildings can be explored in Yangon; a walk is considered the best way to discover the city centre. This is a good option if you would like to focus on colonial architecture. The Yangon City Heritage List offers another point of reference for the city’s architectural heritage. It includes almost 200 structures, among them religious buildings, old pagodas and British colonial buildings. The list therefore covers several categories of buildings. You can choose according to your interests: a walk focuses on colonial-era buildings in the city centre, while the Heritage List also includes religious buildings and old pagodas.
Rail Journey and River Perspective
Visitors can travel on the 46-kilometre Yangon Circular Railway. During the journey, you can get a glimpse of the everyday lives of city residents. This offers a different perspective from walking among colonial-era buildings: here, the journey and views of urban life take centre stage. A river cruise also offers a unique perspective on Yangon. The trips follow the city’s waterways, where you can see the lighthouse on the Twante Canal and the Shwedagon Pagoda from a different angle. The early morning and the last hours of the day are considered particularly suitable times. If a specific time slot is important to you, check it in advance against the particular cruise offering.
Market and People’s Park
Bogyoke Market is considered Yangon’s most popular market and has more than 2,000 shops. People’s Park is located west of Shwedagon; its attractions include a water fountain show and a planetarium, among others. A market visit and specific attractions in the park are therefore distinct activities. If either attraction is a deciding factor for you, check whether it is currently available before visiting.
Pagodas in Yangon
Kabar Aye Pagoda is among Yangon’s sacred sites. Mae La Mu, Koe Htet Kyi, Swal Daw, Ngar Htat Gyi, Arr Lein Ngar Sint and Mindama are also named as pagodas worth visiting. This gives you specific names to consider when planning a trip focused on pagodas. The descriptions differ: Kabar Aye is one of the city’s sacred sites, while the other places are described as pagodas worth visiting. You can use their names as a guide if you would like to include this focus in your plans.
