Qassim: Date Culture, History and Green Spaces
Accommodation in Qassim
An annual 30-day date festival, green spaces for walks and historic landmarks offer a range of travel experiences in Qassim. Buraydah, Unaizah and Ar-Rass each have their own highlights, from events and date traditions to architecture, rock art and walking paths.
Dates, Market Life and Winter Cuisine
The Buraydah Date Festival lasts 30 days each year and attracts farmers and tourists from nearby regions and countries. It is a notable occasion for learning about the importance of dates in regional life. The Al-Hanaini Festival at the Al-Musawkaf Traditional Market in Unaizah offers another way to experience local food culture. It promotes Al-Hanini, an innovative and popular date-based winter snack, and supports productive families and entrepreneurs. The market is also used for cultural performances and festivals. In Unaizah, food culture and cultural events thus come together at a named venue, with the winter snack adding a distinct seasonal touch.
Green Spaces and Nature
Two green spaces are described as suitable for family outings and relaxed walks: King Khalid Park in Buraydah and Palm Avenue in Unaizah. If you like to include time outdoors in your travel plans, you can consider these as specific places to visit in the two cities. At the municipal level, by June 2026 the Qassim Municipality had laid out a total of 41 walking paths, with a combined length of more than 44,000 metres. This total length refers to all the paths together.
Nature conservation is also a regional focus. Qassim National Park in Buraydah supports programmes led by the National Center for Wildlife to release and reintroduce Arabian oryx. These programmes help protect endangered wildlife and promote biodiversity in natural habitats. The birth of an Arabian oryx has been recorded in the park for three consecutive years.
Architecture, History and Heritage
The King Khalid Cultural Center in Buraydah opened in 1986 and serves as a venue for events and conferences. The Buraydah Water Tower opens its doors to visitors during national celebrations and Saudi initiatives. If you would like to include the tower in your plans, time your visit to coincide with one of these occasions. In the southwestern part of Ar-Rass stands Al-Shanana Tower, a historic watchtower at least 200 years old.
Al-Bassam Heritage House is a historic example of traditional Najdi architecture. Built in 1955 using traditional lighting and ventilation techniques from the Najd region, it covers 3,500 m² and is a popular attraction for locals in Al-Qassim. The rock art at al-Ghadah in Unaizah Governorate offers another historical perspective, documenting the social life of an ancient era in Al-Qassim. West of Unaizah, the Heritage Village of al-Ghada is used for cultural performances and festivals. The similar-sounding names refer to different locations here.
Uyun al-Jiwa adds another dimension as an ancient oasis about 50 km northwest of Buraydah. People have lived there since at least prehistoric times. Its location and approximate distance help you consider Uyun al-Jiwa as a destination in its own right, alongside places in Buraydah, Unaizah and Ar-Rass.
Choosing a Location and Getting Around
Prince Naif Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Buraydah is the closest airport to Unaizah, 43 km away. When choosing a hotel in Qassim, it helps to start by considering the places that suit your plans: Buraydah for the park, cultural centre and water tower; Unaizah for Palm Avenue, the market and Al-Hanini Festival; and Ar-Rass for Al-Shanana Tower. If you are looking for a hotel, choosing your priorities can help you find your way around without treating the different places as a single outing.
