When searching for a hotel in Najran, you can shape your stay around historical and cultural themes. Local points of interest include Raoum Castle in the village of Al-Hudn and historic buildings in the Aba Al-Saud district. Archaeology, regional cuisine and the layout of the Najran region add further perspectives. This can help you consider which aspects are especially interesting for your trip.

Raoum Castle and the view of Wadi Najran

The historic rock fortress of Raoum Castle sits atop Mount Raoum, in the center of the village of Al-Hudn in Najran. It is accessible by a staircase. From the fortress, you can look out over farms and villages along Wadi Najran, including Al-Hudn, Al-Mawfajah and Zu al-Harith. Here, a striking mountaintop setting meets views of several named places along the wadi.

Palace and school in Aba Al-Saud

The historic Emirate Palace, completed in 1363 AH, is located in the Aba Al-Saud district. The historic “Emirate” School, later renamed the “Saudi” School, is also in this district. Its mud-brick building has four classrooms and a courtyard of about 75 square meters. The palace and school represent different aspects of the built heritage: the palace’s completion year is recorded, while the school’s building material and interior spaces are described in detail.

Markets and cuisine

Najran’s traditional market is connected with tourism in the province. Its importance stems from its proximity to the historic Amarah Palace. Traditional dishes in Najran City mainly use wheat-based ingredients; Hamisa and Raqsh are also characteristic dishes of the regional cuisine.

In the Najran region, Hamisa is a popular dish made with finely diced meat and fat. Both are simmered in oil for about an hour, with constant stirring; rice or baked goods are served alongside. Raqsh is also a main dish of the region: pieces of whole-wheat bread are covered with broth and meat. The dish is also served at public occasions, especially during Ramadan. The two dishes differ both in how they are prepared and in how they are served.

Archaeology and museums in the Najran region

At the regional level, Al-Okhdood City, also known as Raqamat or Rijmat, is an archaeological site and tourist destination in the Najran region. The Al-Okhdood citadel is believed to have existed from 500 BC to the middle of the 1st century AD. During an excavation there, the so-called Najran Treasure was discovered in 2018: an earthenware vessel containing more than 2,850 silver coins that had lain underground for about two millennia.

The Najran Regional Museum has five exhibition halls. Its prehistoric wing covers the period from after the Stone Age to the end of the pre-Islamic era, with a particular focus on the Al-Okhdood archaeological site and its artifacts. The Najran Museum of Heritage and Antiquities has six exhibition halls, including a “Live Saudi” hall and a hall for visual presentations. These areas of focus connect regional history with specific finds and exhibition spaces.

The traditional women’s market in Najran is also part of the region’s market scene. It is reserved exclusively for women and trades in popular products, household goods and women’s clothing. Another part of the region’s cultural heritage is the making of Janbiya daggers. They are made of iron, with handles made from the horns of certain animals; they are often decorated with silver or gold elements.
