Discover Dombagoda
Accommodation in Dombagoda
Dombagoda can be explored through a range of cultural and sporting themes. A Poson zone and a New Year festival were held on the Ranavirugama grounds of the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps; finals of a T-20 championship were also played at the Corps’ cricket ground. Together, these examples reflect different interests: festival design, community activities, and cricket. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you would like to focus on the Poson lanterns, the New Year festival, or the sporting connection. This distinction provides a clear starting point for your search for a hotel in Dombagoda.
Poson lanterns along the route to the grounds
A Poson zone organized by the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps was held on the Ranavirugama grounds in Dombagoda. Multicolored Poson lanterns were part of its design; a thousand lanterns decorated the route to the grounds. The zone attracted numerous visitors, while the lanterns drew onlookers and worshippers from the surrounding area. Lanterns made from natural materials and paper were crafted by Corps members and other troops in the vicinity of Security Force Headquarters (West). The large number of lanterns and the combination of paper and natural materials illustrate two aspects of the festival design: scale and execution.
New Year festival with a model house and games
The New Year festival, described as an annual event, organized by the Seva Vanitha Unit of the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps took place on April 20, 2016, on the same grounds. Participants included officers, other Corps members and their families, as well as residents of the neighboring villages of Ranavirugama. This brought together groups from the Corps community and nearby villages at the same event. A Gamagedara model house represented an old Sri Lankan home; more than 30 games were also organized for participants. The model house and the games represent different program features: a depiction of a home, and numerous activities to take part in. Compared with the Poson zone, the emphasis here is not on lanterns but on combining a model house with many games and a broad range of participants.
Cricket as another point of interest
Another sporting perspective is offered by the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps cricket ground in Dombagoda. The finals of the Army Inter Regiment T-20 Championship were played on the ground’s new turf. The focus is therefore on the final matches of a named competition; the cricket connection is tied to a specific championship event. Unlike the Poson zone and New Year festival, the emphasis here is on competitive sport rather than festival design.
