Three specific points are especially useful when planning a trip to Pugoda: two churches in named localities, a dated program at Mariyam Jumma Mosque, and bus routes with named endpoints. Each offers a different kind of guidance. You can distinguish the churches by their localities; for the mosque program, the event date matters; and for the buses, the route number and destination are useful. This lets you plan cultural interests and travel separately, using the relevant place or date for each point.

Churches in Bangalawatte and Tarala

St. Mary's Church is in Bangalawatte, Pugoda; Holy Cross Church is in Tarala, Pugoda. The different locality names help you distinguish the churches and specify the one you want to visit. If you plan a visit, check in advance whether visitors are welcome and what hours apply. When planning, give the church name together with Bangalawatte or Tarala so the location can be identified unambiguously.

A mosque tour program on November 8, 2024

On November 8, 2024, the “Welcome to our Mosque” program was held at Mariyam Jumma Mosque in Kumarimulla, Pugoda. It was organized by the Centre for Islamic Studies Harmony Center together with the Muslim Women’s Research and Action Forum and the trustees of Mariyam Jumma Mosque. More than 700 visitors of other faiths attended. They included Buddhist and Christian clergy, government employees, police officers, members of the Special Task Force, teachers, and students.

The program included a tour of the mosque, question-and-answer sessions, and a Qur’an exhibition. There was also a henna corner, an opportunity to try on a hijab, free calligraphy of visitors’ names, and traditional Muslim food was served. The program combined information about the mosque with questions and hands-on activities.

For travelers interested in religious and intercultural exchange, the event is a specific cultural point of reference in Pugoda. It was a past, one-time program, not a regularly offered tour or an upcoming event. If you are considering visiting the mosque, check in advance, independently of the event.
