Darvoz offers travelers a variety of reasons to visit: the archaeological site of the Ancient City of Karon, mountain and river landscapes, and Qalai Khumb with its history along the Silk Road. The region is also relevant to trip planning: Tajikistan’s Committee for Tourism Development lists the Dushanbe–Darvoz–Khorugh–Ishkoshim tourist route.

Ancient City of Karon and its long history

The Ancient City of Karon is in Darvoz District, one kilometer east of the settlement of Ruzvay. The archaeological site covers more than 45 hectares on Mount Zogik; the Panj River surrounds it to the east, south and west. Its history is dated from the Bronze Age to the 17th century AD. This broad time span makes Karon a particular point of interest for travelers interested in history and archaeology.

Excavations have uncovered several structures, whose interpretations range from religious to secular. These include a Zoroastrian tower temple and a Doytiya-Panj river temple, as well as an astrological room. A Chavgan or polo field, a palace, a customs post, fortifications and burials are also interpreted as possible functions of the uncovered structures. Taken together, these different interpretations offer a multifaceted picture of the site, without reducing all the finds to a single function.

Qalai Khumb: the Silk Road and the Pamir Route

Qalai Khumb lies at an elevation of about 1,200 meters, where the Khumbob and Panj rivers meet. The small town was the capital of the independent Darvoz Beklik and an important place on the Silk Road. For travelers making their way from Dushanbe along the Pamir Highway, Qalai Khumb is considered a particularly good and well-known place to rest and stay overnight. Its geographic location, historical role and relevance to travel planning each provide a distinct point of reference.

The Afghan Day Market on the banks of the Panj is also part of the local character: it takes place every Saturday and features the exchange of handicrafts, textiles and spices. The market adds a recurring meeting place centered on goods and craftsmanship to the area’s historical attractions.
