Albion Park Rail offers a range of options for your stay: aviation tours, children’s activities at McDonald Park, railway heritage and public murals. If you’re looking for a hotel, these themes can help you organise your interests for your visit. Some activities have important conditions: the aircraft tour has a limited guest capacity and does not allow children; the playground description lists a range of activities for children.

Aircraft tours at the HARS Aviation Museum

The HARS Aviation Museum in Albion Park Rail offers a roughly 16-metre-long walk along the right wing of a Boeing 747-438 named “City of Canberra”. A maximum of six guests are permitted on each tour. Children are not permitted on this tour, and bookings are required. Check the booking conditions before your visit, as they may change.

The museum also offers tours of historic aircraft. This gives visitors two different perspectives on aviation: a tour of historic aircraft and the wing walk on the “City of Canberra”, with its set length and small group size.

Park activities and railway heritage

The playground at McDonald Park offers a range of activities for children. The facilities listed in the park include a learn-to-ride track, a pump track and a Ninja Warrior park. Individual facilities may change; check the details before your visit if needed. When planning with children, the difference from the HARS wing walk is relevant: children are expressly not permitted on that tour, while the park description lists activities for children.

At the Illawarra Light Railway Museum, the miniature railway runs through the museum’s picnic area in a bushland setting. The track gauge is 7¼ inches, or 184 millimetres. The museum grounds are also connected with the Yallah Station building: the historic building was relocated there and has a traditional waiting room with memorabilia on display.

Another railway attraction is the Albion Park Rail Station Group. It includes the 1887 station building, the lamp room, the Out-of-room, the original Platform 1, the 1890 signal box and movable objects. The group is of state heritage significance. It also includes a rare collection of Victorian-era railway buildings made of timber, dating from 1887 to 1890. The years indicate two construction phases within that span: the station building dates from 1887 and the signal box from 1890.

Murals and local bird species

David Cragg’s mural “Midnight Showdown” is on Princes Highway in Albion Park Rail, next to the Albion Park Medical Centre. It depicts numerous local bird species: Eastern Yellow Robin, Blue-faced Honeyeater, Pink Galah, Golden Whistler, Red Browed Finch, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo and Fairy Wren. Another mural on Princes Highway is “House in the Hills” by Helen Proctor. It reflects the surrounding agricultural landscape and the escarpment edge.

Public murals are a shared highlight of Albion Park and Albion Park Rail: together, the two places are home to one of the region’s largest collections. Streets and laneways are transformed into an outdoor gallery. The works mentioned feature different subjects: “Midnight Showdown” focuses on birds, while “House in the Hills” depicts the agricultural surroundings and the escarpment edge.

Getting there by train

Albion Park Rail is a stop on train services from Sydney Central to the South Coast. Trains run about once an hour, and approximately every 30 minutes during peak hours. As timetables can change, check the times before you travel.

This gives you several themes to focus on during your stay: the limited-capacity aircraft tour, children’s activities at McDonald Park, the miniature railway and historic railway heritage, or the murals. You can take the conditions of individual activities and the approximate train frequency into account when planning.
