Ballina: Discover coastal paths and culture
Accommodation in Ballina
Ballina brings together paths by the water and cultural stops. Specific place names are helpful for finding your way: Shaws Bay, the Richmond River, the breakwater and several named beaches feature in the route descriptions. There are also interpretive cultural paths, a public programme at Ignite Studios and maritime exhibitions. You can organise the destinations according to whether you are most interested in coastal routes, cultural topics or exhibitions.
Coastal paths between river and sea
The North Wall Coastal Walk follows the breakwater. Shaws Bay lies on one side, and the Richmond River on the other; the path ends at Lighthouse Beach. The route links two distinct bodies of water with a clearly named destination. If you want to get a sense of Ballina’s coastline through its place names, the route offers a clear sequence: the bay, river, breakwater and beach are all part of the same route description.
The Ballina Loop Riding Path runs mostly along a shared-use path away from road traffic. It crosses the breakwater where the Richmond River meets the sea, then follows the coast towards Angels Beach. Both paths mention the breakwater, but each has a different focus: Lighthouse Beach is the named endpoint of the North Wall Coastal Walk, while the Loop Riding Path emphasises the character of the path and the coastal direction.
Cultural paths and stories by the water
The Aboriginal Cultural Ways route follows the Coastal Recreational Path north from Angels Beach in East Ballina to Sharpes Beach, then continues to Lennox Point. Along 22 information panels, the route offers historical insights into the special significance of Aboriginal People and their cultural heritage. Stories along the route explore historical events, cultural stories, landscape, language and the significance of place.
The Water Stories and Soundtrail Walk along Ballina’s waterfront offers another cultural and historical journey. The two experiences have different spatial and thematic focuses: the Water Stories and Soundtrail Walk is located along Ballina’s waterfront, while the Aboriginal Cultural Ways focuses on its 22 panels and their themes.
Art and maritime exhibitions
Ignite Studios is in the heart of Ballina, next to the Northern Rivers Community Gallery (NRCG). Its public programme includes workshops, artist talks and special events every year. If you are travelling to Ballina for a particular workshop, artist talk or event, check the current programme in advance.
The Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum is near the Richmond River and the town centre. It features interactive exhibitions and recreated scenes of naval ships. Its location can therefore be identified by two named landmarks, while the exhibition formats bring the museum’s maritime character to life. Unlike the paths by the water and the programme at Ignite Studios, the focus here is on exhibitions and recreated ship scenes.
